I am fairly new to FL although not new to guns. I was hoping to get some help on some decent ranges in the "South Florida" area.

I am familiar with a few (Nexus, Alfies, Bass Pro Shop)

Since I have moved here I have only actually shot at Nexus. Never really wanted to go to Bass to shoot....figured it would be way to crowded.

I've been thinking about maybe getting a membership with the Hollywood Pistol & Rifle club (but I have to be sponsored by a member) so if anyone here is a member or has any insight on the range I would really appreciate it.

I'm looking for a range without too much of a wait and decent prices. Around this time of year here indoor ranges are the go to because of the heat, but I don't mind an outdoor range either.

My take on Nexus:

I actually like it. Yes the set up and signs/lights do make it a little "sterile" or "institutional" feeling haha. But in a weird way it's nice. They require a membership ($10) prices are....ok

$15/hr Paper Target
$25/hr Nexus Lanes (virtual targets)

There have been many reviews on Nexus so I won't go into too much detail. A little pricey as I would like to shoot twice a week, so looking for a new go to range.

But for now until I meet people here and "find my way around" it'll have to do.

Any recommendations or help would be greatly appreciated!

Stonecloud, Nexus is probably the nicest indoor range even if it is pricey. I like Pembroke too, but the crowd can be a little rambunctious. Also Pembroke is pistol only, no Rifle calibers. If you want to shoot rifles outdoors, the best is to join a club that rents the Markham (or TG) tactical range. I shoot once a month at TG. I used to do the same at Markham.

Sebastian, Thanks for the info!

I didn't even know there was one in Pembroke. I'll definitely have to check it out.

I have been looking at Markham because I do want to shoot rifles. I was going to go check that range out soon. Hopefully next weekend, finding time is difficult needless to say.

As for joining a club I'm not really familiar with any shooting clubs around here....are there any you would recommend to join or stay away from :what:

You mentioned the TG range...which is that? I did already try googling and couldn't find anything!

Markham and Trail Glades (TG) are the two county owned out door ranges in Broward and Miami-Dade respectively. They are both divided into two parts, a public range on the right side, and a tactical range on the left. The Markham tactical range is used by LEO's during the week (or at least it was) but is available for private groups to rent on the weekends. The TG tactical range, is rented to private groups all week long. Joining one of these private groups is your best bet. PM me your experience, what you want to do, and I'll see if I can put you in touch with the right folks.

The public side is ok. However, as a municipal range they cater to the lowest common denominator. The range officers can be a bit draconian. But, I've been there when someone put a ND through their hand, and another time a top heavy grandma in stiletto heels almost sprayed the line losing control of an AK, so I understand why they have so many rules.

Well that is why I wasn't finding TG b/c I was looking in broward! haha

I have heard some mixed reviews about Markham also, regarding the level of courtesy the RO's have and the "crowd".

And yes I get very annoyed as well when the range is filled with arrogant people that have no clue about guns and just go there to be "cool."

Those 2 instances that you mentioned are the reason why. If anything happens to me I don't want it to be from some low life idiot!

I appreciate you putting me in touch w/ people I'll PM you. Probably looking to shoot at Markham first as TG is a little far from me. But I'll want to get myself over there too.

I've never had a problem at Markham besides crowds. If it's a weekend, show up early or be prepared to wait. RO's aren't bad in my experience unless you're not following the rules.

Thanks for the info. I wish I could shoot during the week, but like most the weekend is my only shot. I'll make sure to get there at opening, b/c with this heat I definitely don't want to wait!

Glad to hear you have had good experiences there. I like to get a few opinions because what I have heard could be biased.

They don't sell ammo at Markham do they? I always bring ammo, but just good to know if they do in a pinch.
