Brown Bear ammo ... decent?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this ...

Ammo to go has some Brown Bear .308 for $375/1000rds, this is the cheapest price I've seen for .308 in a while (even Georgia Arms reloads generally push $.75/rd), but I have some qualms shooting dirty russian ammo through my National Match M1A.

I'd only be using it for plinking. Should I be worried or just go ahead and snap it up? Am I wrong that that's a pretty good price or is BB always that cheap?

I use Brown Bear for playing/plinking all the time, no problem. The "dirty russian" ammo doesn't concern me, I clean all of my guns after use, regardless of what ammo went through it. I the words of Ron White it's "an entertainment value!"

I use it in my SKS and have had no problem. Like the above gent, i clean all of my guns after a day of shooting no matter what.

I've used their .308 in a PTR91 and it worked great in that. BUT - I probably wouldn't use it in a National Match M1A, partly because of the steel jacketed bullet with the potential for faster barrel wear.

I just went through 500 rounds of Brown Bear 9mm and had zero problems with it. I was actually making fist size groups with it through my Beretta Cx4 at 100 yards. It's a little dirty but that's to be expected from any of the Russian ammo. I fed it through all my 9mm handguns and never had any problems with it. Personally I think it's a notch above Wolf in quality.

All of the "Bear" ammo is good quality,no worries. I got an e-mail about this stuff from Copes ,and passed this on to a freind.

Not too bad if similar to the Gold Bear (just brass plated)...and it should be nearly identical.

For that price, you can't go wrong. It goes bang every time, usually in the right direction. You will need to pay special attention to cleaning. Also, the lacquer on the cases smells funny when you shoot it. You'll presumably be outdoors, so that shouldn't matter.

A caveat: I would not use this ammo to hunt. Not accurate enough. If money is an issue, I'd handload a box of the best rounds you can make.

At least in some calibers, Brown Bear is Barnaul ammo and as such is not nearly as dirty as Wolf (which made my SKS look like the inside of a car muffler). Barnaul 7.62x39 is sold in some places as Monarch and it's decent stuff. By comparison I had a Wolf case banana peel at the neck and FTE, and have never had a problem with Barnaul (except one FTF in steel-cased 9mm).

I have used Brown Bear in both my SKS's (7.62X39), my 2A Enfield (.308), and all 3 of my Mosins. No problems ever, except for a bit of copper fouling.

My wife's guns are a Mini-14 and a Bushmaster AR. We've used the Brown Bear 5.56 in both for plinking, but not for hunting. Got to draw the line somewhere . Again, biggest problem was some copper fouling.

And the smell. Although I do believe they put a little less cow manure in their powder than Wolf does.

I shot their .223 out of my AR and it exceeded my expectations as far as accuracy goes. Dirty, but I wont beat that horse, its already dead.

I use it in my M1A, won't hurt the rifle.
