Just picked this up last week at the local gun show. Never had a Browning like this, just Marlins. Any input would be very helpful, like value, and rarity. Here is what I know. It was made in 1992 Browning 1886 Carbine, it does have the saddle ring and a 22in barrel. I paid under $700, that's it, that's all I know. I would rate in to be in excellent condition.

Back about that time I came within a gnat's whisker's breadth of picking up one of those new for a little less than that price......if the supplier of the gun store I was doing business with had fulfilled the order.....before I had to move.......
:cuss:

Sorry.....it's a painful memory ......:(

Very nice! Is this your first 45-70? There has been lots of good folks here with help on the 1886 model and the 45-70 cartridge. I'm working on getting mine to shoot tighter groups like others have posted. I can handle 8- 10 rounds per range visit and need to give the old shoulder a break. The one you have sure looks clean and no tang safety is a plus. Have fun.

Beautiful rifle, I have a long barrel one but would someday like a carbine like yours also.

DMH, I have had several 45/70's, the first deer I ever shot was with a Marlin 1885. I have had just about all the Marlin's. The one I regret selling the most was the Trapper w/16in barrel. The last Cowboy I bought was in the same condition as this one, and I paid $350 for it 5 years ago. Now their $1000, that was what I was comparing this by too. I figure is a Marlin was worth $1000, I couldn't get hurt for $650.

Sirjimmy, If you don't mind look at a thread I started about a 1894 model marlin made in 1895 in 44-40 cal. in the rifle county forum. It may be boring, but if you have any input it would be appreciated. I was not attempting to hijack you thread. Getting back to the 1886 Winchester I think you got a great price on that rifle and worth twice what you paid for it. I know price is subjective to what someone is willing to pay, but even the Italian clones are $1300.00 - $1800.00 depending on the brand. Not long ago I was on my way to buy a Davide Pedistoli model 1886/71 copy of a Winchester in 45-70 and that was $1600.00 I wanted the 45-70 in a short rifle with no tang or push button safety. I got lucky and stumbled onto a Winchester 1886 in 45-70 for a lot less. If I would have come across a Browning from the early 1990's like the one you found I would have gone that direction. Since you have other 45-70 I'm sure you are way ahead of me in shooting and loading for the cartridge and rifle. I have read posts by Floatpilot, Driftwood Johnson and Craigc that have been very informative on the 1886 and the 45-70.

Anyone know where I can get a tang sight for it, and what would be a good one?

SurJimmy, Do you have any other rifles with a tang sight? The reason I ask is some do not like how it gets in the way of you thumb. I have wanted to get a tang sight but do not have one yet. I like the way they look and prefer the peep sight.

If I could find the right size screw, that would be better. What has happened is the previous owner put a tang site on it at one time. Well he couldn't find it when he sold it to me, so it has a hole right behind the hammer. I may try taking it to a gunsmith and see if he can fit it with a screw. I never modify my guns, so this is new ground for me.

Longhunter, contact Arthur K. Pirkle, of Yuma, Az. He has a complete stock of original and reproduction Winchester sling swivels and studs at excellent prices. His E-mail address is [email protected]. Landline is (928)783-9108.
His parts list is VERY extensive. Give him a ring.
