Browning and Winchester

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all this is not a negative about either Browning or Winchester. I would love to have new model 70. My question is with both companies under the FN Herstal wing as I understand it. What is the real difference between any rifle from either company? The Winchester is made by FN and the Browning made in Japan? Neither is made by an American company right? I guess that part is over know except maybe Ruger which may be the last true American company. I was just curious if either brands nowdays are relly any different?
Thanks

The Model 70 is made in the USA, in the new Winchester plant in South Carolina.

Mine says Made in USA right on it.:)

Some guns are made in Belgium, some are made in Japan, and some are made in the USA.

ArmedBear is right all are owned by FN and are made in a few different countries. My SX2 shotgun is made in Belgium by FN but still labled Winchester. My 1400 shotgun is made in America pre-sale to FN. It really sucks but most products are not made in the great USA anymore. We are selling out to the cheapest bidders. Not to be a smart *** but do you shop at wal mart? Not much American in that store let alone other stores. As far as the Winchester thing goes it has a great legacy and is still a great gun maker and thats enough for me. Its hard to buy American anymore.

My main point was if Browning and Winchester are not the same basic gun know? I know they are made in USA but are not owned by a USA company.

I called Winchester(browning) to put in a parts order and the lady said they were waiting on parts from Japan. She wouldn't tell me though eluded that the receiver, barrels and stock are US made. The rest was cast/machined in Japan.

The Browning Citori is made by Miroku in Japan. FN tactical bolt actions are made by Winchester in the US. Winchester 101s are made by FN in Belgium.

i am as red blooded, flag waving american as anybody could ever claim to be. i try to buy as much american made goods as possible. but when it comes to guns, for some reason, i have no hesitation in laying down a stack of treasurey notes for a foriegn made gun. i have no problem supporting a company who employs people who take pride in their work and do it well. even with modern cnc machines, there is a certain craftsmanship still employed in the firearm industry, bordering on artistry, and i can't begrudge a cfraftsman nor artist their work no matter where they call home.

I still would like to know the difference between a Browning and a Winchester ? I do not care where they are made. I was just making reference to them being owned by the same company as was wondering if they are made similar?

was wondering if they are made similar?

no. and yes. depends on wich browning and winchesters your comparing. the win 70 is very similar to the old pre '64 70. the browning a and x bolt is nothing like it. the win sxr on the other hand is a slightly modified bar.

ROC1,
You're going to have to specify between WHICH Winchester and WHICH Browning product?
Otherwise you're asking a senseless question.
Both brand names offer a number of different products.

The new Model 70 and the new Browning A or X bolt what is the difference between these bolt actions? I am curious since they are owned by the same group if there is much difference between them?
Thanks

The model 70 and the X or A Bolt are completely different rifles that share nothing in common.

The FN PBR is a model 70 Winchester. The Winchester auto rifle (SXR?) is a BAR Longtrac.

roc1, is a Chevy Malibu the same as a Buick Regal? After all, they're both built by GM.

Probably best if you go to a gun store and look at a couple of bolt-actions from Winchester and Browning. Compare: They're visibly different.

roc...many differences, the receiver, bolt, stock and even the barrels differ.
The Browning corp. imports the A,X-Bolt rifles from japan...the Model 70's are produced in the U.S....
Some say that, because Winchester and Browning are owned by the same company, that the new Wincheser Model 70 is 'assembled' in the U.S. from jap parts...not so, as far FNH is telling! The Winchester model 70 is 100% made in the U.S....?

Both companies are owned by the same parent company, but both produce, and are differentiating in their designs and products.

Browning manufactures nothing and there is no Winchester plant, both brands are sourced in a number of places, and the boltguns are quite different, as noted above.

I heard once, that the Winchester stocks are outsourced. Only heard it once, and never followed up on it. They are nice though...

As far as the differences, they are made to the design specs of the rifle models.

If you look at the semi auto rifles, you can see similarities between the Winchester and Browning. I doubt the parts are interchangeable, but they may be close enough to have utilized some of the same tooling, to a different degree of completion/size, probably to save money.

Look at the SX2/SX3 and Browning Gold/Silver, there are similarities there as well.

The bolt guns are pretty different. They both have looked pretty much the same for decades, though I think the biggest change is the triggers on both.
