Hi guys I just joined this site and was looking fore some opinions. I wandered upon a Browning BAR 2 safari in a 30 .06. It is in excelent shape and due to a beginning of the year sale at my local gun store, is marked down from $599 to $480. Im not really in the market for a new rifle at the moment, but this seems to be a pretty good deal. Thanks for any input.

I've been thinking about finding a Lightweight Stalker in .308 for a woods gun. I really like the way they feel, and I'd like to have an autoloader in that caliber.

BAR MK ll is a better gun than the Standard BAR in my opinion and I own a Grade Two standard BAR in .30/06.
The MK ll rifles have a manual bolt hold open that the original don't and the gas system has been slightly modified to better feed and function with full power 165-180 grain hunting loads in the .30/06 rifles.

With a suggested retail of something like $750.00, brand new, I think $480.00 would be a deal I would consider.

Oh yeah MK ll rifles use a different magazine than the originals.

Sounds like a decent deal to me. I have a friend with one in .300 Win Mag. That thing's a big, heavy cannon to be luggin' around the mountains all day, but the weight and the gas operated action helps soak up a lot of recoil. It's decent accurate for an autoloader, under 2 MOA. I don't know if it ever could be a MOA gun, but he hadn't done a bunch of reloading for it when I shot it, using factory stuff. My impression of it was, I'll keep my bolt guns, but I'm not much of an autoloader fan. It functioned well and was well made, a pretty gun.

I had the BAR Safari in 7mag and liked it. It was very accurate for a semi. I didn't like lugging it around though in the mountains. You got a good deal.:)

I get the feeling that people don't have much to say about the BAR because it is a generally trouble-free gun. Or is that wishful thinking?

My plain jane, second-hand, but well-cared-for BAR in 30.06 has been 100% reliable and very accurate. I paid ~$500 three years ago. BAR's are almost universally held in high regard. Score on that rifle! :D

PS. Recoil with the BAR will be a bit less than in say, a bolt gun due to the action. When you "become one with the gun" you can actually feel the action cycle which is very cool. ;)

Sound like a good deal. My 30-06 BAR was almost $2000, used! Kinda heavy at close to 20#, but the box mags are fairly cheap.

I bought the BAR Stalker in .308 a couple years ago. Without BOSS. Very nice gun. Then I convinced myself I needed a 300WSM, so bought the Stalker again, with BOSS. Slightly better accuracy, but the 308 is under 1" groups at 100 yds with the right ammo. The 300 has shot a one hole nickel sized 5 shot group at 100 yds with 150 gr Hornady Interlock over Varget. BOSS also reduces the felt recoil substantially. It does create loud side noise at the range like any muzzle break.

The Stalkers are lighter than the gun you are looking at.

Thanks again for the input guys. I want down to the shop yesterday and picked it up. Now all I need is a set of rings and a leupold scope.
