I'm looking at purchasing a shotgun and was wondering if I could get some help on the value and year it was made.

Browning Shotgun. Special steel 12 GA – shells 2 ¾. Serial # 70G49XXX. Belgium made. Vent Rib. Excellent Condition. $800

Is this a fair price or should I cancel?

Browng A5 Light 12

First thing you need to do is find someone in your area to show you how to set rings and how to not over or under grease then sit back for many years of pure enjoyment. Great gun at decent price!! I would buy and never look back!!

If it is real great shape then its worth it! A-5 's are around, remington has one also made there as well.

The last A5 I bought was Belgium-made, Light 12, 28", mod choke, and a bit rough but perfect functioning, $500. Usually I see prices closer to $1K.

70G serial number was a Lite-12 made in 1970.

As for long-recoil operated A5's kicking more then gas operated.

Yes they do, but they kick much much less then a pump or double, and noticeably less then an inertia-recoil operated auto like a Benelli.

Set the friction rings properly for the loads you are using, and oil or don't oil the mag tube to tune it further.

I bought a Benelli M1 because I thought my A5 kicked too hard with turkey loads.

I sold the Benelli after one season because it beat the snot out of me much worse with turkey loads.

That just means the Benelli didn't fit you properly
ACTUAL recoil is a function of mass and gun weight an velocity
PERCEIVED recoil, aka KICK, is an issue of fit

The Benelli came with a fully adjustable stock shim kit, and fit me better then my old Browning A5 after I used them.

It just plain kicked harder then a properly set up A5 is all.

unless you're a Browning junkie there are better options. The Auto-5 was a landmark gun decades ago, one of JMB's best. Unfortunately, its day has passed IMO. Look around for a newer gun...
