Hi,
I am picking up a lightly used Browning BPS 12 ga., 28" barrel, 3 choke tubes and an extra, unfired 28" barrel. In the box for $350. Just wondering if this is a decent price for the package. I haven't found any comparable 870s in my area for that price. This is meant to be a general purpose shotgun: home defense, recreational target work, possibly small game hunting. I'm not familiar with Browning pumps, so I thought I would ask.

Thanks, Jeff

I would say that it is a good deal for a lightly used BPS with a choke tube barrel, 3 tubes, and an extra barrel. Figure the extra barrel at $100 and you are picking up the shotgun for $250. If it fits you well, it's an even better deal.

A gentleman I shoot skeet with likes the BPS so much that he has one in 12, 20, 28, and 410. He let me try a few shots with the 28ga yesterday and it was really nice.

I'd say that is a very good deal! As long as it shoots straight and runs the shells smoothly, you won't find a better "do all" shotgun. How about some pictures?

Enjoy it!

And I'd call it a GREAT deal! Like DaleCooper51 said, considering the extra barrel is worth $100.00, it's like getting the shotgun for $250.00 (or less, because I don't think you can find a new spare BPS barrel for much less than $250.00).

Finely balanced shotgun, as nice as a Wingmaster for the price of an Express.

A tad heavy, but that only matters for applications like quail hunting, for which I'd have a specialized gun anyway (not an expensive gun necessarily, just a quick and light 20 or something).

Guys,

Thanks for the feedback. I was able to pick it up this afternoon. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, hopefully this week, but the action is tight and smooth and shells load and eject smoothly. It feels good when I bring it to my shoulder. I like the idea of the bottom eject, since I always save or police up the hulls and it's easier to catch them in my hand than bend WAY down to the ground, which is getting farther away every year.

I'll post some trap results when I get to the range and will upload a photo if I can figure out the digital camera. (I'm a film kind of guy.)

Regards, Jeff

I would call it a good deal if it is hardwood and bright blue finish. If it is matte with synthetic stocks then I wouldnt have gone for it.

Wait, this 28" barrel gun comes with an additional 28" barrel? I'm wondering whether you didn't make a typo, because that's a weird deal. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer to buy only the shotgun, less the redundant barrel.

This one has hardwood (decent wood, in fact, but not extraordinary) and blue steel.
As to the extra barrel. This was a consignment piece at a local gun shop, not a private sale. The package was for the gun, the extra barrel (it looks unfired), the 3 choke tubes, and box with the instruction manual. No one knows why there is another 28" barrel. The owner provides a minimum price and the gun goes on display for a week where customers can bid on it. (I've seen these quasi-auctions get a dozen or more bids.) Anyway, there is no negotiating. No big deal. If I decide I don't want the extra barrel, I can probably sell it at our gun club swap meet in a few months.

Jeff

Or you can have it cut down for a slug/HD gun. Probably cheaper than buying another barrel.
