When dry firing my Tristar Field Hunter O/U (with snap caps in) the barrel switch is done automatically.
When dry firing my Citori 12ga I have to put the weapon on safe, switch from over to under or vice versa, then place the weapon on fire, then fire the second barrel. Weapon will not change barrels on fire. Is a fired cartridge required to cycle? Is there something wrong?

I'm not completely sure I understand your description, but I'm more than a little dense.

I'm not familiar with the Tristar, but it sounds like it has mechanical selectors. Your Citori has inertial selectors - the recoil from the first shot sets the other barrel to fire.

If you're dry firing, you have to maneuver the safety switch, or gently bump the butt of the shotgun after dry firing the first barrel.

It doesn't sound like anything is wrong with your Citori.

You can either bump it on the floor -(why risk cracking the stock?), or just smack the butt with your hand.

As noted above, your Tristar has what are called mechanical triggers, while the Browning uses inertia triggers - it needs the recoil from the first shot to reset the sear for the second barrel. Perfectly normal. IF you change barrel choices while shooting - say sporting clays - remember to make sure you move the lever all the way, or you might leave your safety on - that cost me one bird in a shootoff for $100.......
