I have saw some pictures of a custom Browning HP that that been refinished and had the front and back of the grip stippled. My serial # on my HP is on the front of the grip. On a custom gun such as this is it legal for the gunsmith to restamp this serial # in another location or is this a no no? :scrutiny:

Hello. When stippling the front strap of a Hi Power having the serial number there, the gunsmiths usually just stipple around it. I may be wrong on this part but I THINK that the serial number on a gun can be moved with written BATF permission. I don't know if there's a form/application process on that or not.

Best.

Gunsmiths do restamp numbers. first restamp [with the same number] then you can remove the original one . I'm not sure you even need to ask but check to make sure.

Yep, they usually just stipple around the serial number. I have one that is stippled around the serial number and has a border around the serial number.

They can move the serial number to the side of the frame, after obtaining ATF permission.

Re-stamping the serial number, even if just renewing the old one in the exact same place is an act of manufacture, requires a specific license, most who do custom work have it.

Performing an act of manufacture without the proper license/ATF permission is a felony.

Be careful out there.
