Do I need to use magnum primers with deer loads for this rifle ? I'm loading Hornady 180 gn XTP's with 2400 and W296 powder. Also, what are good deer loads using these powders ?

This should be in the reloading forum, but yes with 2400 or 296 always use magnum primers. Slow burning (magnum) powders need magnum primers. Good Luck.

Your bullet choice is good and so is your powder choice. I'd recommend magnum primers from the get-go for either powder. I find that they are a little hard to light off and with magnum primers, they seem to burn more efficiently. In other words, I find them more consistantly accurate with magnums.

Good luck with your load and hunting with it. I took a hog with the 180 XTP from a Ruger GP 100. Showed good penetration and also good expansion. Hog was DRT-just like you want.
