I am in the market for a new autoloader, and I have been looking at the Browning Maxus.

I am looking for a "do everything" gun, (I know there is no such thing, but you know what I mean) I would like to use it for assorted hunting as well as clays.

I would probably get the 3" gun, as I would like it to shoot lighter target loads, and have no use for anything more than a 3" load (the 3.5's kick like a mule).

So I am asking if anyone had any experience, good or bad, and would like to share.

I've used the predecessor to the Maxus for the last 10 years now, the Gold Fusion. Having looked at & disassembled a Maxus in person, the only thing I found to be different & better than the Gold Fusion is the way you access the magazine. Flip the switch on the forearm and it slides right off, insert a quarter into the slot on the mag plug and give it a twist to remove the plug. The gas piston is a bit more refined on the Maxus than the Fusion from a visual comparison, but if its anything like the Fusion, it'll be fine for anything you have in mind.

The Maxus stock has a lot of minor tweaks to it that makes the overall fit of the gun much better than my Fusion, but not enough for me to consider buying the Maxus to replace it. Its hard to say how it fits better, but it certainly feels better/different than the Fusion.

You'll be hard pressed to find a better auto-loader for the money. For me, as long as Browning is still making shotguns, I'll keep buying them as I need them.

I was told that the Maxus and the Winchester SX3 is the same shotgun. I got to see both of them side by side this past weekend. They are indeed the same gun. A couple of cosmetic differences on the forend was all I could see different. It could be that one or the other could come up on sale. Get the one that has the best deal!

So does anyone have any insight into 26" vs 28" barrels? I would like to be able to use it for skeet, as well as upland hunting and some waterfowling. I'm leaning toward 28" but I'm always open to suggestions.

Maxus and SX3

SX3 is the old Browning Gold and not the Maxus

For skeet and sport clays I prefer a 30" Maxus Sporting to my Maxus Stalker in 28. i use the 28" for upland hunting. 28" swings smoother for me then the 26".Try them both. We are all built differently. Both are 3in. No need for 3.5"

I have several thousand rounds through my Stalker and just over a thousand through my Sporting. I have had no issues. My Stalker is a great do everything gun. My Sporting was a gift from my girlfriend. Sporting is for what the name implies and it wont disgrace itself for bird hunting if the owner makes the appropriate allowances. My girlfriend loves her Stalker in 26" for upland and clays but she is 5" tall. She kicked my ass on Fri on Sporting Clays wearing her 5" platform spike Jimmy Choos. She forgot her other shoes when she met me for a round of Sporting Clays after Black Fri shopping

The Maxus is a great gun, but so are all of the Gold based gas system children. There are a couple of things about the Maxus I dislike, the way the magazine tube is sealed, having to remove a pin to remove the magazine cap to clean it stinks. I have about 9500 rds thru my duck gun and the receiver looks terrible, the finish is chipped all over and it is a black gun.

I like the way it shoots, but I also like the Gold, Silver and the SX2/3 series as well. Does it have less recoil, maybe, but just slightly over the others I mentioned.(I have them all and have compared them side by side)

I have shot clays, trap, skeet, dove, turkey and ducks/geese with mine, it is as close as a "do-all" as I am ever going to get.

If I had to do it again I would find me a NIB Silver or SX2 and save the money for shells, chokes, case or other gear.
