Buckshot for black bear...really??

that suggestion was probably made back when you could'nt use slugs for hunting. N.J. here back until the late 70's or early 80's you could only use buckshot for deer and bear if there was a black bear season then. the remington boxes suggest #1,2,3,4, 0,00,000 buckshot for deer, black bear suggest 0,00,000. and they even say on the box for best results use a FULL choke. larger than #4 buck will not spread right in my 870 using a full tube. i would only use slugs,0 or 00 buck if that all i have on hand.

My OPINION: I strongly BELIEVE that multiple, well-placed shots with 3" Magnum 00 Buck shells to the head and shoulders of ANY charging bear would rip it apart.

Oob & slugs on black bears

This is for all you people who like to talk it up ,but cant really back it up . I personally have drilled 17 black bears with oo buck , both in the 3" & 3-1/2 inch variety . At ranges from 6 feet to 30 yards , believe me if you put the shot anywhere from the chest forward regardless of angle or animal temperment. It flattens them hard & right on the spot . There is no substitute for time spent in the bush.

Folks,

This is a necro-thread from 2008... the link for it is http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=397648, to offer an example.

Anyone who wants to pick up discussion on a thread this old needs to start a NEW thread on the topic, include a reference to the link for the old/original thread, and go from there.

Things change over time, and re-launching a thread several years old is apt to leave some big gaps... That's why the board software offers a warning about posting to an old thread.

Like this:

Times change, and the answer given in this thread may no longer be the "right" answer. Technology, market forces, the regulatory environment and culture have probably all changed, for better or worse. The price when this was posted is probably not the price now. The laws then may not be law today. The user who recommended the product or service now has 1565 days more experience with it and may not have the same opinion today that he did then.

Please only post if you think doing so makes more sense than starting a new thread.
I am aware that this Thread is rather old but I still want to make a reply.
