does anyone have any recommendations as to which manufacturer and size of load works best for remington 870 super magnum in the 3 1/2 inch shell as far as holding a good pattern? I am looking to use it for deer hunting with buckshot, not slugs.

The combination of a specific gun and ammunition varies widely.
What shoots great in one gun will shoot poorly in another just like it.
Also remember that the choke also can affect patterns widely.

About all you can do is buy several brands/types of shells and shoot the gun for pattern.

I've owned both the 870 Supermag as well as the Nova 3 1/2" guns. I have fired a few of the 3 1/2" turkey loads through them. I am normally very tolerant of recoil and have fired rifles up the 416 Rigby with no notice of recoil. You could not pay me enough to fire a 3 1/2" buckshot load. I'm not mad enough at anything or anbody to endure that again.

Buy some 2 3/4" buckshot and practice.

Is your gun a full choke, or screw in choke tube? You should really look to 1 buck and you will more than likely try most 3" and maybe 2 3/4" brands not the 3 1/2. Max powder is max powder regardless of shot. You can get a bit more velocity with the short shells and a 3" being a good compromise. Try any other buck you like but i grew up shooting it and never found a 0,00,or 000 that would group as well if time was put in. Remeber full chock try 1buck if a lesser screw in choke is tried then maybe an 0 buck can be found that your gun likes. With a long barrel and the best round for your gun you could kill deer out to 80yards + If hunting smaller deer ,out to 100yards. Add on sites will help too. Fold up a towel to put between your shoulder and gun and those recoil reducers for the stocks do work if yours will accept one. You will want one ..Take a big dumd friend along to help shoot. hehe I have had two buckshot guns in my younger years and one liked federal best the other winchester. Most buck hunter i new shot 1 Buck of one brand or another, and 00 would not cut a hair at 100 yards in my full chocks. Like said earlier it just deppends on your gun to what it likes. Don't give up early, might take all your friends to help and all the 5 shoot box's out there sometimes. Typicaly 0,00,000 work best in much more open chokes. 4 buck can shoot a hell of a pattern but can run out of steam at longer distances. See if a appliance store will give you a bunch of cardboard refrigerator box's to use as targets. GOOD LUCK

Super magnum buckshot in an 870?? You are a braver man than I. I know I can only handle about 3 rounds of magnum buckshot in my Browning pump before I'm through with it. Can't imagine a super magnum buckshot round unless fired from an auto. Ouch!
