The Savage Mark II is a great choice. The one thing I'd mention with used ones which I see was already mentioned is make sure you get the one with the accu trigger. I see lots in this area used for around $130-150, but none of them have the accu trigger.

BTW if you get one without the accu trigger Walmart used to sell them for $117, however, I think last time I was in there it might have been $127. So make sure if it doesn't have the accu trigger that you don't pay anymore than that. They are still under $200 new with the accu trigger.

Well, from a semi auto point I would go Marlin 60. If it is a bolt rifle then either a Savage or a Marlin. If you want a lever rifle Henry is about the only choice in that price range. Then there are rifles from a few decades ago on the used rack. Many are top quality rifles but often they don't come ready for a scope mount. There aren't too many bad rimfires out there made today. Pick what you like.

I didn't see anyone mention used yet. If you really want budget and a fun project to boot, buy an old beater off of Gunbroker for < $100 and fix it up. You can typically find old bolt actions made by Mossberg, Marlin, etc for the big box stores (e.g., Montgomery Wards or Sears) for around $100 or less. They'll need some TLC and they won't look like much, but they do shoot. I've bought and fixed up a couple of those old rifles made back in the '30s and they have been perfect for my kids. I enjoy the work of fixing them up.

We love our Marlin 795.
On sale for $124.95 with a $25.00 rebate.
Put a $30.00 scope on it and we can chase a pop can all over the pit with it!

By far our favorite gun at the out door range.

It now has a couple thousand rounds through and will fire just about any ammo.

I was going to buy a Marlin 60 to go along with it but a sale at Cabelas ion Nagants and we too are now looking at ordering a box of 7.62 x 54R........

I just finished a test of 2 popular 22 rifles, the winner was the Mossberg plinkster, under $200. The other day at the gun store I noticed a "magnatech" 702. It is identical to the Mossberg in every way except looks, it looked rather plain compared to hot pink camo. The sticker price on the weapon, new, was $120. Thats full tilt retail. I don't know anything about magnatech, but it looks just fine to me. A 22 to practice and plink with just makes sense.
Good luck

Here's what I think would provide the most bang for your buck, and yes in this order;
1. Marlin model 60
2. Marlin model 60
3. Marlin model 60

These are my top 3 and yes in this order. After that everything else is about the same.
