Hello THR! I've been carrying folders for years now and have been thinking about trying out a small-ish fixed blade in a kydex belt sheath for a change of pace.
I know almost nothing about fixed blades, and I'm on a very tight budget. No custom knife for me.
I want a knife that is as easy to access as possible, get a full grip on the handle and pull it out and use it, no snaps, thumb breaks, or pocket withdrawl-thumb open-finalize grip like a folder. Just grip and pull. I was thinking a kydex type belt sheath?
As this will be an EDC, I am really wanting a knife with a full size handle (4-5") and a small, non threatening blade, maybe 3-3.5", and preferably not coated for civilian friendliness. Maybe a blade as short as 2.5" as long as the handle was still decently sized. I know nothing about carbon steel, so I'd prefer a quality stainless that will hold an edge as well as a typical $50-100 folder like I'm used to. The other feature I really want in the knife is a comfortable handle with a very deep finger guard/choil, and full tang construction. Tough and safe. Main use will be everyday stuff, but I need a knife that I can fall back on in an emergency, from a disaster that needs some tough cutting to a 2 legged predator if OC and words won't work. I'm too young to CCW so knives are important to me. Hence the quick sheath and deep choil. But I'm not looking for a scary black tactical knife. Something traditional or classy would be cool.
I've been browsing Amazon and other sites a bunch, few things I've looked at would include a Mora Companion, Cold Steel Pendleton Light Hunter (with a $20 aftermarket kydex belt sheath). I've looked at some of the 3"ish Izula/Becker stuff, but those are a little pricy to me, all black, and I know nothing about carbon steel.
Any thoughts? What do you guys like? Thanks!
Basically I'm wanting a break from worrying about pulling the folder from the pocket and thumbing it open, then closing it, or ever worrying about a lock failure. Absolutely love my Spydercos, just ready to try something new
