Budget over-under?

Lots of nice used ones out there.

I sold a couple of nice SKB 600's for $600-$650 and have seen the 500's for $500. Some of the older Daley's are nice and, as PapaG said, the Brownings can be had for less than a grand. They don't fit me well but they might feel great to you.

I thought barrel length also affected the pattern size/shot spread at a given distance? Or is that more affected by choke than barrel length?

Choke is by far the primary factor in patterning.

I had the same itch as you a couple years ago. I ended up getting a used 28" Belgian made Winchester 101 for $800 with 5 chokes. If you look you can find another. Lord know I do, my Wife took a liking to it, so its not my gun anymore =)

Stoeger is a no go based on what I have read. They are known to fall apart even with light use

That Mossberg Silver might be just the ticket. I am also intrigued by the idea of having my 590's barrel worked on; it's something that never crossed my mind though I suppose it should have.

The awesome budget O/U has yet to be built. In my opinion you are much better off with a quality repeater. Just because the barrels are one on top of the other, it does not mean that it is superior, and none of the real gun knowledgeable people will be impressed. A Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 is far more likely to go many thousands of rounds trouble free, and kill clay pigeons just as dead. A Remington 1100 or Beretta 3** semi are both 200,000 plus round guns. I don't care if some call me a gun snob, but I have seen and heard far too many accounts from budget gun lovers who have bought them, and who almost always say "I love it, it has been great. Only problem(s) I have had have been (fill in the blank)".
Particular if you are new to O/Us, get a used Browning or Beretta and practice learning to shoot rather than gun repair.

Can't agree more. I was responding to the OP's question.
I shoot a Beretta 686 White Onyx Sporting, but with his price point and his desire to own an O/U I recommended what hit his price point. I agree that a good gas gun or pump at his budget is a better choice.
Your brand choices are spot on.
The Browning Citori I referenced in an earlier post would be my choice.....

In the used market I've heard nothing but good about SKB's. Made by Miroku, I had one of their SxS's a while back and it's one of the few guns I've ever sold that I kind of regret. Very tight, solid gun, first rate quality. You may be able to find a smoking deal on a nice used O/U, they seem to have fallen out of favor in comparison to auto loaders. I know I don't see near the selection that use to be available years ago.

In the new guns I've heard a lot of good things about CZ's, and the ones I've seen were very nicely made.

SKB's were made by SKB. B.C. Miroku made the Charles Daly and the Brownings, also the Winchester 1885 single shot and the 1886 lever gun.
