This will sound sillyto many of you, and i have yet to test it, but the idea came to me least night and i absolutely could not get it out of my head! So i 'built' it today.

Take a standard blank molle vest.

Attach a butt pack to the right front side using alice clips and the straps on the back.

I stored clothes in this pack (1 BDU pants and jacket, beanie, 3 pairs of socks, t-shirt, and boxers fit with some room to spare)

Above this i placed the same pack i have listed below ---->

On the left front upper side (Webbing) i put a

In this i put a mess kit and stove.

Under the above i put a

Which held a flashlight and can hold some other things if you want.

On the back i put a larger version of this into which i can fit 6 MRE's.

Or, if your so inclined (This is something i think i will do when i get a few extra $$)

Anywho, twas an interesting idea i had. Until i walk around in it for an hour i cant say much for or against it, aside from that it displaces the weight far more evenly, and things are more organized.

I have yet to take my jog i shall go do that with the vest on and ill report back in a few minute

My first grab is a jacket. It is a cabela's upland jacket from a few years ago that has no orange on it, just tan fabric. The jacket is set up, and hangs in my closet. The right side front shell loops contain several buck shot and slug 12 ga shells, buck on top, slugs across the bottom, the left side shell loops hold five 1911 mags. The inside left pocket has a uncle mikes soft holster sewn into it with a near stock, GI Colt 1911 sitting in the holster, only mods to the Govt model are, night sites, long trigger, triggerjob to go with it and a commander hammer.

The left hand warmer pocket has a Streamlight TL-2, a pair of thin gloves and fleece hat, the right handwarmer pocket has a couple of health bars. The top left pocket, has a buck 110 folder with the plastic scales, a glasses case with a spare pair of glasses.

The rear "game" pocket has a fleece jacket in a vacuum packed bag, also has a pair of long johns packed the same way. A black diamond headlamp just sits there too. Internal breast pocket on right side has dupes of all my ID's. Lower right inside pocket has a plastic garbage bag rolled up tight to make a emergency rain poncho. The jacket has two loops on outside rear to hold water bottles, two 1.5 liter water bottles sit in these.

Set up this way I figure I am ready to meet what ever I come up against on a moments Notice. This hangs inside my closet high up, as far up as i can reach, right next to my 870 police. I have a grab belt with 6 AR mag pouches right next to it. I grab my jacket and my wife grabs the belt when she grabs the M4gery. on the floor are a small bag with some other essentials.

I say ditch the BDU's. There are clothes out there that will hold up better and serve you better than BDU's. Natural colors, of course, to help blend in if necessary.

Butt pack on the side will get uncomfortable when you walk.

You're still going to be hard pressed to beat the standard medium ALICE pack.

Or consider a MOLLE pack

Jamis jockey, before i had this idea i was using a medium aloce pack w/o frame (WHich i REALLY need to get if this doesnt work out).

It worked fine, but i figured i might be able to get something better.

Anywho...

Took a 10 min jog around the block area and it worked out realy well.
I could definitly notice that alot of the weight was spread onto my chest reather than on my shoudlers pulling back (Which wsa the main cause of annoyance, even when the straps were pulled up tightly. Im sure the lack of fram didnt help here either  )

ANywho, i wont be going backpacking until summer so i wont have a chance to find out for some time, untill then, results were good.

PS- Saw that molle pack in the catalog, looked real tempting. If this doesnt work out i may get it....

If you get an ALICE pack, get a large with the frame.

You live in Colorado, which means lots of clothes and a big sleeping bag for the outdoors in winter.

I would recommend avoiding the MOLLE and CFP-90 packs, especially the CFP-90, the one I had started to fall apart almost immediately.

If you want to spend money I have heard nothing but good about Kifaru packs, but they are expensive.

I recommend replacing the pack straps and waist belt if you go with the ALICE.

And look at a Camelbak or similar water bladder, it makes a big difference.
