For a long time I have wanted a Fal, but I have never had a use for one. If I could build one and save a good amount of money, I suppose fun would be a good enough reason to have one. So my question is, how feasible is it to build a fal from a surplus parts kit and a US reciever, and if its reasonably possible, how much could I save?

First off, go over to the falfiles.com and read a lot and use the search function.

To answer your question, it is not too hard. There are some specialized tools, but if you have an active building community around you--search the forum--you'll likely be able to find someone to lend you what you need.

Now about the price--they are going up fast! Kits are not being imported like they were. What you used to be able to get for $99 several years ago will now cost you $350. Recievers are coming down a bit though. US parts are not as available from as many sources, but DSA still has everything you'll need--just not cheap.

Plan on spending at least $600--$700 for a build these days. If you get away for less than that count yourself lucky and spend it on ammo.

Another way to get an affordable FAL is to find one of the Century built FALs (I'd stay away from those marked L1A1) and then add the improvements you feel are needed. These used to sell for around $350--$500 and can still be found for much less than a "name" rifle. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find one that works great and needs no work.

Seriously, this is a fun rifle to build and very rewarding, but I'd make sure you read the falfiles extensively and understand what you're getting into.

It's not hard - I've built two.

gunthings.com has Imbel kits for $250; Interordnance has Imbel kits for $200. Tapco is a good site for accessories and your US compliance parts. I used CAI receivers that I picked up for just over $100 ea - I don't know what they are going for these days - some gun guys turn up their noses at Century stuff but they worked fine for me. I also liked the CAI US made trigger/sear parts - cheap and didn't take much fitting to get to work.

The FALFILES forum has great info on how to build a FAL... It's not difficult...
