I have been looking for a rifle to be used primarily for range {paper} firing with the occasional hunting trip. I want a target style, bull barrel, thumbed stock,etc.etc. and my question is would it be cheaper to build it or should I just buy a new one like the Savage Model 12 or Remington 700, or etc.etc.

If you`ve built your rifle post a pic or two and explain what you`ve done along with a price range. Give me some ideas.
THANKS:)

Generally cheaper to buy new

I agree. As of right now a friend of mine is building a similar rifle, he's asked me to track down some of the parts he's wanted because he's not bargain savvy.

As of now, it's a Remington 700BDL SA .308 with what I believe he called a 'varminter' barrel? It's not quite a bull barrel but larger than a stock barrel.

Just a rough estimate of what he's spent on it, including the rifle, is around 1300-1800 not including the scope. He spent about another 1000 on the scope. But he's also wanting to learn to make 1000 metre+ shots.

Brownells lists CZ`s std lenght action only at $548.19 or Ruger MII BBL`ed actions at $380.00 (this is a std factory sporter barrel `)
Pac-Nor std match grade barrel, $205.00 or Hart from $295.00 - $330.00
Fitting and chambering barrel to action (by Pac-Nor) $250.00
Boydes thumb hole stock, (laminate), $173.00
Fitting and bedding barreled action; priced according to the smith, or if you are able a do it yourself for the price of the epoxy.

I`ve went this route a few times in the past and and by the time I was done and scoped the rifle I was always well over $1000. The last one I did was a 6.5 Swede on a Mark X action I already had. I went with a Hart match BBL, Timney trigger, old Fajen stock my smith had laying around, and B/L Elite 4x12 scope I`d bought on sale when B/L turned their scope line over to Bushnell a few years ago. I did the bedding and stock finishing myself and still had ~ $1000 in the rifle.

It is almost always cheaper to buy factory

It's not quite a bull barrel

Why not the bull barrel? If he`s spending a grand on glass why wouldn`t he at least put a match grade barrel? Confusing

Match grade barrels come in all weights. You can get a feather weight or straight taper "bull" barrel of the same bore quality. The barrel on the 6.5 in the picture is a sporter wgt Hart. They only make one grade of barrel and are one of the top brands in benchrest circles.

well i paid $499 plus 200 for the scope... but you can get a cheaper scope like a tasco for $50-100 dollars and they work great.

I built this for less than 1K...
Savage 116 action from savageshooters.com...$360
Shilen Match 6.5x47 Lapua barrel from Midway... $300
Choate Ultimate Varmint stock (has since been replaced with a Bell & Carlson Duramaxx)...$129
Nikon BM 4.5-14x40 SFMD from Academy through a buddy... $188

I haven't been able to shoot it too uch, but I have gotten a .211" and .311" group out it. (5 shot)

I posted pics of my Savage in 6.5x47 Lapua on your other thread, with costs. Still under $750. I need to get loads from shooter john though, my best 5 shots is .294". I'll use "just started load development" as my excuse.

Master of Arms I have been looking for a rifle to be used primarily for range {paper} firing with the occasional hunting trip. If you're like me, you get that new rifle out of the box and, in a week or month,
you get that trigger job, - trigger work, good glass, etc. My use of a rifle is exactly as yours
..." primarily for range {paper} firing with the occasional hunting trip."

After picking the brains of a few shooters that have earned my respect,
they convinced me to just get what I'll end up with from the start.

Have a look at the Remingtons Custom Shop - probably the BEST of its type in the world.
Yeah, I know - I thought I couldnt afford anything from that outfit. I was wrong!

Check out the REMINGTON MODEL 40-XB...

AT http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/custom_shop/40-x/model_40-XB_rangemaster_thumbhole.asp

....................Its simply the best Rem 700 made! .....................

And, oh, disregard the MSRP....
real world shopping proves that you could have one of these for a fraction of those prices.

If killing paper, occasional hunting and long range shooting are you're interests,
ya cant go wrong! And the better the results, the more you'll shoot -the better you'll get!
Google Remington 40-KB rifle...read a couple of the reviews...OUTSTANDING!

I would recommend a 3rd category.

Doing it yourself with an old rifle.

Buy an old Savage (Pre-Accutrigger). As you can afford it, start replacing things.

Save up each 1-2 months or however long is needed for each step. It may take you a year or more, but you get to DIY, and it's fun. I said Savage because the barrel nut and a set of Go/No Go guages makes changing the barrel easy.

As a matter of fact, I think this may be my next project.

, oh, disregard the MSRP....
$2970.00!!!! lol
$999.00, including tax, for a standard 700 with a bull barrel. I`m a little reluctant of going with a Remington. No offense, its my own personal opinion from previous experience. Thanks
