Building a 10/22

So I was reading the other thread about building a Ruger 10/22, and it had some good links for part sources, except the recceiver.

So if you want to build one, do you have to buy a complete gun first and just replace parts?

you can buy a reciever, volqartsen makes some, but they cost about twice as much as a stock rifle from wal-marx. plus, you'd have to have it shipped to an FFL, buy EVERYTHING else individually.... you're better off buying a stock rifle and replacing certain parts as you see fit.
I'm not sure why someone would need to buy a different reciever, other than making some ultra accurized ubber 10/22 you see all the time at rimfire central.

edit: the recievers are available from rimfire sports, BTW.

Go to Bass Pro Shops right now. They have one with a birch stock and 20" barrel for $169.99. That's the best deal you'll find.

I bought a Ruger 10/22 Carbine from Wal Mart in May.

I drilled into the stock and installed sling swivels and a sling port side, "tactical" style.

I painted the front sight with white paint.

I purchased 1 extra 10 round magazine from my gun shop for $16.

It's very fun to shoot. I don't think I'm going to modify it any more.

Get a C&R FFL and get your stuff from Brownells. You'll save enough to pay for the FFL 3X over..
