Watched a YouTube video of someone doing this. He seemed happy with his build. Anyone here try it? Or, have better results replacing 10/22 parts with aftermarket parts? Nothing I'm considering, just thought it was cool.

Ruger-Free 10/22’s are actually pretty common, and have been for a lot of years. I built my first Ruger-Free right around 20 years ago using a Volquartsen receiver, and it’s only become easier now with even more manufacturers in the game.

The quality of the end result varies by the parts used, but MOST aftermarket parts for major components will be better than Ruger’s factory offering, which means the end result is typically better than a factory rifle. But the consequence is a steeply increased purchase price.

I built one about 10yrs ago using a Nodak/Spud receiver, KIDD trigger and 21.5" Clark mid-weight barrel. One of my most accurate rifles. The barreled action is now in a nicely figured Ruger walnut sporter stock. I've done a bunch more using Rugers as base guns, because at around $230, they're hard to beat. 90% of the time, I prefer to use the Ruger polymer trigger housing with Power Custom innards.

You have more options now. Quite a few sources for receivers. The KIDD bolts are wonderful. Were I to do another, I'd probably start with a KIDD Supergrade.

My three 10/22s are all mixmasters (the SS target rifle is an AMT Lightning knockoff):

I think the Ruger 10/22 BX trigger assemblies are a pretty good value, and I gravitate toward Ruger bolt assemblies and magazines for the same reason, but none of mine have Ruger receivers, barrels or stocks. Not a prejudice, but that's how things turned out when I was spec-ing these builds.

My 10-22 has only the receiver and bolt original. Kidd trigger, Shaw barrel, other buffer, barrel block, and a hand me down bedded Ruger laminated target stock. The original gun was a standard model bought on closeout for $125.
My other one was like that original but I swapped for an old walnut stock, added a Volquartzen hammer, changed the buffer and mount and then slipped in a stainless standard barrel that was unused by another shooter. Kind of cute, stainless/walnut.

In addition to the aftermarket 10-22 recievers there are also quite a few companies producing complete 10-22 clone rifles, such as the Bergara BXR, magnum research, T/C TCR22, volquartzen, ect... Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if someday ruger isn't even producing the majority of 10-22's anymore.

I have a couple of franken rugers 10/22 where the only thing ruger is the receiver, everything else from various sources, like Kidd, and Green Mountain barrels an so on.

I bought a Ruger receiver from S&P just so I could build the rest out the way I wanted….OK, the first of several steps is admitting I have a problem….

2 of mine started out life as stock ruger, now only bolt and receiver are ruger. Just finished putting together one with brn receiver volquarson bolt vq carbon fiber barrel a old ruger aluminum trigger housing with tk trigger parts, an aluminum chassis. Yes I could have just bought a volquarson complete gun for about the same price, but what fun would that be?

I would like to replace my receiver with a Kidd.
The hole in the receiver for the barrel was drilled crooked, it puts the barrel hard left in the barrel channel, not so noticeable in the original stock, but in a Hogue stock the barrel really rides the left side hard and it doesn’t shoot that well. My CZ Scout puts it to shame.
A common problem from what I’ve read over on Rimfire central.
I put a VQ hammer in my trigger group, very nice pull now, so I would just transfer the trigger group to the Kidd receiver.
Some day replace the barrel with a 16” taper barrel.

What issues are you having? Here is the latest I built and can't find the other one and the other 10/22's are factory. This one has a Kidd barrel and the Boyd's at-one stock don't can't remember the trigger, could be a BX not sure.

I refuse to count up how much I have in 10/22 upgrades lol...just can't bring myself to do that
Kidd, Volquartsen, Green Mountain, Pike Arms, Tactical Solutions, Elite22LC, MagPul, Wiland, etc etc
Here's the latest one- upgraded for steel challenge use with a left charge Tactical Innovations Elite Receiver, Pike Arms Barrel, Trigger, and MagPul Hunter Chassis (soon to be replaced with a Wiland Chassis)

beautiful, how's it shoot?
It shoots a lot better than I can. I love shooting it at 200 yards and wished I had opted for a higher magnification scope. It has the Bushnell Forge 3-18X50 and I average about 2.75 inch 10 shot groups to 3.9 inch groups on a calm day. Sub moa to moa at 100 yards all day with CCI, Aguila, and Wolf match extra. I only shoot 40 grain rounds. It does not do good with subsonic rounds at 200 yards. I'm thinking that because there seems to be a swirling wind always at the range that the slow velocity rounds get affected more by the wind than than having to go through the transsonic stage.
