Hello everyone, I am planning on building an AR-15 in the near future and I wanted to ask a question about the stock.

I will be buying a stripped lower and upper- http://www.surplusammo.com/surplus-ammo-arms-ar15-stripped-matched-lower-upper-receiver-set/ -so they will not come with any parts and I wanted to know what I need to do to make sure I can put a collapsible stock on the gun. Will the stock come with a tube, or do I have to buy that separately? This is the stock that I am interested in getting: http://www.skdtac.com/Magpul-MOE-Carbine-Stock-Mil-Spec-p/mag.212.htm
Also, does anyone know if this upper will be a commercial or military tube?

Some stocks come with tubes. Some without. You will have to check with the supplier if the ad doesn't specify. Commercial or military refers to the diameter of the tube where the stock slips over it, not the thread diameter of the receiver. Again, check with the vendor to ensure that the stock and buffer tube are compatible.

i may have read wrong, but if you asked about military or commercial tubes, thats the lower, and the threads are the same in the lower, difference is in the tube to stock relationship.

As long as your buffer tube AND stock are the same i.e. mil-spec or commercial it will work. The difference is the diameter of the buffer tube (as mentioned before).

Building AR's are very easy but do take some ammount of mechanical ability and some common sense. If you do a google search for "Brownells how to build an AR video" there is a series that shows you how it all works. This has been very helpful for me. Also make sure you have the proper tools, sure you can make some tools work in place of others but you risk a plethora of negative effects.

Heres a link just in case:

I can tell u by the price it does not come with a buffer tube...that stock with buffer runs about 100 bucks...check out eBay..I got the magpull acs for 110 and ordered a tube seperatefor 30...saved 40 bucks...make sure u get a tube that is finish inside and out ...if inside isn't finished it will be a gritty and noisy action

O and the description says drop in replacement for mil spec tubes which means it does not come with buffer...if u order this stock make sure to order mil spec tube..if u get a commercial stock make sure to get a commercial tube

+1 on that, also if you're starting with a stripped lower unit don't for get to get the buffer retainer and retainer spring.

Retainer and spring should come with parts kit and most buffer tube kits( make sure u get the whole kit) comes with tube, buffer, buffer spring, and sling plate

Thanks for all the help guys! So just to make sure, all I have to do is buy the same buffer tube type and a stock that will fit it and I will be ok?

Was there something about the surplus arms and ammo receivers you really liked? Or was this just based on price?

@hunter104...yes...find what stock you like then search google shopping for the best price or go to ebay for a probably better price

AR-15 is the single easiest platform to assemble from parts I've ever tried. However, you DO need to be very careful about which parts you use. Not as much for safety as for reliability, but both are relevant. Don't cut any corners with critical components if you can avoid it. AR-15s can be anywhere from a reasonably accurate jam-o-matic to a precision rifle more reliable then the AK-47.

My best advice is to do your homework before you build one.
