Building up a shooting berm/backstop ideas?

Our club range tried the semi tire wall back stops & found too many rounds bouncing back.
Maybe I ought to mention the range I described had their tires impaled in the side of a hill that was slanted with mixture of sand and clay at about 60 degrees to the shooting positions at 100 yards.

I used 2 dump truck loads of yellow sand with a wall of railroad ties covered with corrugated plastic behind the sand. Sand has no rocks in it and bullets are easily recovered. Woodchucks have re-arranged some of the sand but they also provide targets of opportunity and a little shovel work puts the sand back in place. Put in place in 1972.

Whatever you build, remember that a dirt or gravel pile naturally compacts over time. A core of logs or other biodegradable material will also compact as it decays.

If I were building a new berm, I would leave access so I could easily add fresh material, or would initially build the berm taller than desired.

The impact area of my home range is ready for a refresh. The berm has slumped 18-24" from the day about four years ago when I initially built it.
