I did a search on this and didn't see it on THR. I wanted to make sure the other AK-philes here were kept in the loop.

Cope's Distributing is importing Bulgarian 75 round AK drums (7.62 x 39). They are currently taking pre-orders. Allegedly these things are going to flood in. Some say they are simply copies of the Chinese drum, others are saying China is selling off their drums to Bulgaria who is simply stamping them with a "circle 10" and then selling them to US wholesalers. :scrutiny:

Price is $160, which isn't great, but better than $200 plus for a 15 year old Norinco drum.

In theory, if enough come into the US, the price will have to drop market-wide. So I'm not sure if this is a "jump on it quick" or wait and see if the price goes down. Either way its awesome you don't have to rely on gunbroker and bidding wars to get a Chinese style drum. :)

First the anvil arms engraved lowers for 100 bucks, now this! You guys are really trying to send me to the poor house. Lord knows I've wanted a drum since..., well since I first bought an AK!!!

Still 2 Many Choices!?

I have a dealer friend of mine that sells those for 140 or 150 I think. Lamed Leo Gil out of katy tx. You can proly get a hold of him to ask, at Gil's auto sales, katy tx.

I'd rather have 2 40 round mags for $50. I've never been too impressed by drums: too heavy, too bulky, what do you do with it when it's empty?

BSW

I picked up my Norinco drum around 10-12 years ago for $35.00, and if the supply ever recovered I don't see why they couldn't be almost that cheap again.

maybe il pick one up.

i would never buy a russian/Romanian style one. but the Chinese style ones are easy to load and can be kept unwound

Totally understand the point. I myself got a bunch of 40 round mags for $11.99 each back in the day. Two of those clipped together are the same thing.

However we aren't getting ready for a war here, its a collecting thing. And yes, a nice drum (that hangs down, doesn't jut forward like the Romanian ones) looks absolutely sexy on an AK.

Part of me wants to wait until the price goes down market-wide, but part of me thinks if Obama becomes president.... this is the last chance to get a drum. :scrutiny:

Romanian drums load from the top and have a lever to assist in compressing the spring as the magazine fills up.

Chinese drums open from the back. You fill the spool with rounds, close the back, and then you wind up the spring.

More info here.

What's the difference between the different drums?
Romanian drums load from the top and have a lever to assist in compressing the spring as the magazine fills up. What he means is: you insert a round, and push the lever, insert a round, push the lever, continue 73 more times. These only unload two ways: shooting them empty and unloading them one at a time, by hand.

Chinese drums open from the back. You fill the spool with rounds, close the back, and then you wind up the spring. What he's not telling you is: When you're at the range and got your 10 Chinese drums loaded for your catch-my-handguard-on-fire-video, and your wife calls with the "you better be home 5 minutes ago" problem, all you have to do is push one button inside them to release all spring tension, and they'll be perfectly fine until next time.

Chinese drums are definitely the only AK drum I'll buy. The Russian pattern just sucks too much, imho.

Even more info on the Chinese drums here

Love those Chinese drums, have a 75 and a 100 rounder. The loading ahead of time, believe me, is much easier, and I don't think I would load a Romanian drum that far ahead of time. However..., on some AK's. the Chinese drum, (maybe WASR-10) the Chinese drum may be annoyingly loose in the magwell.

It is frustrating that the Chinese probably make these for $5.

I was hoping that "norinco usa" company was going to step up, but the web site is suspect- they were supposed to be up and running in June, but that didn't happen.

There is no telling how the market or the political scene will change, so it might be wise to grab one while you can. :scrutiny:

Is one design more reliable than the other? What about durability and longevity? Overall, how is reliability compared to a standard steel 30 rounder?
