well, the bug has hit me again... I need another AK... I'm looking for a Bulgarian AK-74 with wood furniture and the side scope mount... not having much luck finding a sweet deal... anybody have any suggestions? thanks, John

I tried looking for one but they were all sold out literally everywhere. I gave up and just went for the last AK 74 Polish Tantal that a website had.

If you want a Bulgarian you've basically got three options:

1. But a parts kit, have it built.
2. Find a used Arsenal SLR
3. Buy a Waffen Werks. They're Bulgarian parts kits on US receivers w/ US barrels.

Number three is probably your best bet and will only run you about $600-$650 for a really quality AK-74.

Its fine that you prefer wood furniture but first priority for an AK should be the build and parts quality. For that reason i think Arsenal is the only way to go as the receiver, barrel, trunions, bolt and carrier are all real original and pretty much identical to what the Bulgarian military issues. Just as importantly these parts are properly assembled and riveted. There are some really nice parts kit builds out there but most don't have original barrels and some are of far lesser quality than original. I don't believe the most common american made receivers are of the same standard as the original and the chrome lining of foreign AKs is superior. The other option would be to get a Russian Saiga which has all real russian made important parts and convert it to the configuration you like at your discretion. Beware though that a full conversion will likely cost a bit more than just buying an Arsenal out right.

They are harder than ever to get. Im glad i got mine. Just like the underrated SAR 1 they were plentiful like Yugo SKSs then things changed. The WASR replaced it and the SAR 1 is a whole lot better . I also wished a got the ROmak 2 in 5.45 with the laminated thumbhole stock. They are all original Romanian as well.

Atlantic Firearms has plenty of 74's with wood furniture. They range from affordable to not so affordable. I think they give a discount to THR members but I might be blowing wind out of my a**.:D

Most of the inexpensive AK74 rifles have dried up across the country we do have a nice selection of higher quality AK74 rifles starting in the low $700 & up .:)

Are those Waffen Werks AKs? I've read a lot about those and they seem to be getting some killer reviews. I bought a CAI Bulgarian a few years ago and was severely disappointed. From what I've seen WW is the only builder that sells with wood furniture, anybody know for sure?

I got a Poilsh Tanatal last week but after seeing the two rifles pictured
before, I almost wish I'd spent the extra money and gotten something
like that. They are gorgeous!
