bullet mold size for 1858 remington ?

Hello all, I have been looking into buying a conical type bullet mold for my 1858 remington pietta repro. The possibles shop has a couple on their site. One is .450 and the other is a .456 so Im not quite sure which I need. I was thinking the .456 might be closer to diameter used in a ruger old army but Im not sure about that either. Anyone out there have any info on this matter or maybe a link I could go to and learn a little more about this ?

I have Ubertis which state they need a .454 size ball and Pietta which use a .451. If I had to choose between a .450 and .456 I would take the larger. .450 may prove easily undersized. Remember, you need to shave a lead ring off to load the ball right or recoil can push them forward and possibly jam the revolver.

I've used that lee nominal 450 bullet in my Ubertis and find that it swages in tight. My actual cast diameter was .452" and my chambers are .450" . Another bullet that works very well is the ones from the iron scizzor mould sold by Dixie. the problem with them is that they have no sprue cutter and you have to clip off the sprue and file it short. accuracy seems to be about the same with either and they will strike a few inchs higher than rb loads.

My Pietta 1858 is very accurate with .457 roundballs, which I also shoot in my Euroarms 1858 and Ruger Old Army.

It would be safer to go a little to big than too small. For what it's worth, Pietta Remmie's seem to do best with a .454 diameter projectile.

With an oversized conical you may have to use both hands to ram that bugger down the pipe though!!!
