Bullet trajectory comparison

Hi Folks

I am looking for a tool that would allow me to plot bullet trajectories. In particular I want to see a comparisons of 7.62x54R 147 grain, 150 grain .308, and 168 grain .308.

I got a good deal on an IOR 4x scope with a dragunov reticule. The scope is calibrated for 168 grain .308. I want to use it with 7.62x54R with my PSL. I am trying to determine if the bullet drop adjustments on the scope can be used.

How far from madison do you do your "snow Shooting"??

I'm not sure that that will work very well unless you develop a handload for it. The 7.62x54R is a little more powerful than a .308 and the 24" barrel on a PSL will make full use of that extra power. What's more, the PSL is widely regarded as not being well suited to heavy bullets.

Personally, I would just find a load that the PSL likes and then work out a conversion factor or a ballistics chart in order to use reticle.

The adjustments are probably close enough; I suspect you won't be shooting at 1000 yards with a PSL, and at shorter ranges the discrepancy will be small enough to ignore.

Definition of "shorter ranges" will depend upon how much discrepancy is acceptable.

Running "Remington shoot", with a tad bit of hacking (using .308 bullet data with 7.62 velocities to simulate the Russian cartridge), we find that:
Remington's 168gr .308 round drops 420" at 1000 yards.
150gr swift Sciroccos drop 360" (MV=2953fps) at 1000 yards
150gr FMJ (BC = ~.315, MV=2953fps) drop 470" at 1000 yards.

Drop curves arn't exactly similar, but they are close enough...

Your 'max range' is about:

1000yards*sqrt(max discrepancy in inches/55")
