Bullets hitting aftermarket MB..uncommon occurance? (on WASR-10)

Fellow Shooters,

A little while back I purchased a Romanian WASR-10 GP and replaced the slant brake with a US made copy of the AK 74 type muzzle brake. All seemed to go well except for some filing work I had to do on the back surface of the MB in order to get a tight fit and line up with the detent pin.

At the range I noticed that my bullets were flying extremely high at 15 meters and adjusted the sights accordingly. I then decided to do some shooting at close range. Upon close examination of the target I found that my bullets were keyholing at 15 yards. An inspection of the muzzle brake revealed that the bullets were striking the lower edge of the MB prior to exiting the muzzle, indicating that the MB was off center.

Needless to say, the standard slant brake was reinstalled. Anyone else have a problem installing a MB?

It may be the MB or the threads on the muzzle may be off center. I doubt if filing the back of the brake down in order to index the brake contributed to the problem. Either way I gained no significant advantage from having the MB and went back to the slant brake.

Actually, filing the back of anything that indexes against something else can cause the part to misalign.
If you didn't check your work with a T-guage at the very least, you may be off center.
I don't know just how much filing you did to get the part to align, but if we are talking a couple hundredths of an inch, and you filed at an angle not 90 degrees, it could be enough to throw the muzzle brake off center.
