After spending hours upon hours reading about the WASR 10, as well as what to look out for, I finally pulled the "trigger" and picked one up at the local Dunhams the other day for $420. I've stopped by there a half dozen times to look at their inventory, but was never satisfied with what was available.
Over the weekend, I saw they were doing a 2 day sale and decided to head over once again. There were none on the rack, but they had one left in the back storage room. I was pretty impressed by what I found - less magazine wobble than hi-cap mags in my Ruger 10/22, decent furniture, no front sight cant, chrome lined barrel, and the price was right. The only minor dissapointment was that it is the civillian version - missing the bayonet lug and the slant muzzle brake, and that the cleaning rod was missing as well.
These were minor issues for me as I can't imagine a situation where I would ever need a bayonet (I don't really buy into the zombie apocolypse), a slant brake can always be thrown on, and cleaning rods are easy enough to come by. Besides, I used the missing cleaning rod as leverage to get an extra magazine out of the deal. After taking it apart for cleaning, I was even more happy. After a couple of scrubs with the brush, it only took 5 swabs to get a clean patch, and the barrel is in great shape. The rest of the internals were very clean as well.
The best part came when I went down to the range this afternoon. I started out free standing at 25 yards and threw out a 5 shot group that measured around 2" or 3", and was just below the bullseye. I then moved out to 50 yards, leaned against a bench, and was able to throw out a 10 shot group that measured 4" right in the red. Finally, I put a beer can up, walked out to 100 yards, and was able to put 3 out of 5 rounds on the can. Granted it was a Foster's can. so I had a bit of an advantage there. I then moved back to the 50 yard bench and proceded to empty the rest of the mag at a high rate of fire, virtually destroying the beer can. I then shot the last 30 rounds, also at a relatively high rate of fire, with a <deleted> grin on my face as I destroyed the centers of the two targets I put up. I know those groups could be considered less than impressive to some, but I was very pleased. I guess the real dissapointment of the day came when I realized I was out of ammo.
I guess you're asking why did I feel the need to post this? The main reason being that it is just a testament to being a member of THR and having a vast amount of knowlege out there about anything and everything related to firearms. If I didn't have this forum, I would not have known what to look for, and could have wound up very dissapointed with my purchase. Instead I was well informed and ended up very happy. A big thanks to everyone who contributes to this forum, and especially to those who host and monitor it! Now to go buy more ammo...
