RW,
Here is m,y pickel.... I own a CZ VZ 58 Assault Rifle. Like everything Czech, it is special in many ways. Unfortunately, it is chambered in 7.62 X 39 but instead of the listed diameter bullet being 308, as Sierra says, it is bored to .3121. Just a tad oversize and, as you might expect, not quite the tack driver. I have a pee pot full of 310, 311, and 312 Sierra bullets to try in the 312 bore. I think I can get it to perform adequately, for a Assault Rifle. but I am not trying to make a bench gun out of it. 311 and 312 will probably work fine.
Now, to utilize the thousands of rounds of Mil Surp 7.62 X 39 ammo I have stocked, I am going to "build" my own 58. I have purchased a receiver, a kit gun that has all the parts except the receiver and I will purchase a match grade 308 Bull Barrel and chamber it for 7.62 X 39. This will match the reloading charts and EVERY COMMERCIAL ROUND of that calibre I have miked and shot. Now those Czechs aren't anybodies fools and they must have expected the odd 312 bullet to "happen" and I assume they didn't want the gun to choke to death on it. I was pondering how careful I would have to check my ammo.
Thank you all for some very interestring replies. Is it the c onsensus that 311 will work but 312 might be dangerous? 310 max?
Thank you all,
John

I would definitely NOT go .004" no way no how.
However I've found + or - .002" to be completely acceptable and largely indistinguishable on target.
Why are you asking this?
