I seem to remember seeing ad's for a bullpup stock for a 10-22. Any good?

Wondering if this concept could be applied to a M1 / M1A or Mini 14 as they share the same basic action design.... Comments?

Depends on your definition of good. If you define good as 'different', then it's good. If you define good as meaning 'still has a decent trigger and decent ergonomics', then IMO it's not so good.

Most kits that I've seen had these really long (and invariably flexible) rods to connect the new trigger assembly back to the stock trigger mechanism that was now somewhere just off your earlobe. In the 10/22 conversions that I've handled, the play and flex in this arrangement made the triggers just awful.

defn of good

I guess I mean that with good technique you can reliably hit what you aim at, ie it operates reliably and consistently.

Looking for a short length 30 caliber weapon for bear defense and general hunting in the arctic to put in a small aircraft survival kit. (no specific calibre preference as long as ammo available in the Canadian Arctic, but something that can stop a polar or grizzly bear and also be used to hunt caribou, seal, walrus, wolf, wolverine, sheep, bison or muskox -as available- for food if needed)

Wild West Guns

What you seek has already been built, check out their Co-Pilot. The maker of these weapons is actually a board member here, WildAlaska.

I think it would be a better fit for your needs than an aftermarket bullpup assembly.

If you find it really doesn't work for you, a folding stock AK might be a good idea. Very reliable, especially in such cold/harsh environments. I'm not entirely sure about their usefullness against something like a bear though, someone around here surely knows for sure.

Take care-

Converting an existing action to a bullpup design is a difficult propsition at best, and a reliablitly and expense nightmare at the worst. I think you'd be better off looking at deticated bullpup options first like the Bushmaster M17S, an AK bullpup (don't know the avail on these in CA but they're expensive and hard to find here), et al.

Folding stock might be another viable option depending on the use yours will see.

Add on BULLPUP STOCKS are PROHIBITED in CANADA. But for $345 ca. from ( www.marstar.ca ) you can buy a NORINCO N870-14.00 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN WITH A 14 IN BARREL ( a remington 870 clone) which because it was manufactured with the 14 in. barrel is legal but can't be made shorter than 26 in. overall. BUT you can't take it into ALASKA OR ANY OTHER STATE because THEY DON'T LIKE NORINCO ( some trade ruling) AND THE 14 IN. BARREL NEEDS PROPER TAXES PAID AND LICENSING. Maybe a REMINGTON 700 or WINCHESTER 70 in an appropriate calibre with a CHOATE FOLDING SNIPER STOCK might be the ticket.

Bears etc

Unfortunately the AK line (no matter the manufacturer) is classified as restricted so cannot be carried except between home and a range etc. But the shotgn idea has merit. Looked at a Mossburg 590 Mariner in SS with a 18.5" barrel and full length tube. Comments?

Also considering a 12GA Neostead NS2000 with 2x6 round mags but not sure about it's classification. Available comercially in Italy no problem however.

Will look into the WWG's some more, thanks for the tip. Which is better, .450 Marlin, .457 Magnum Marlin, .50 Alaskan or 45-70 (handloads?)?

There are top and side folding stocks for the MOSSBERG 500 which I believe fit the 590. Makes them more compact but not lighter.

If the shotgun will fit for you 'size wise' I think it would work great. Nothing else will be as versatile for sure. And folding stocks can be had commonly.

I would actually email WWG or WildAlaska on this forum, or move to the hunting section, to ask about which cartridge would suit your needs best. I'd be hesitant to imagine that there will be realistic occurrences for you that will take more than a .45-70 though. My very humble two cents.

Neostead - import info

Commercially manufacctured and distributed, but not commercially imported as far as I can tell :cuss:

Available through http://www.a-ztech.it/neostead.htm (use an internet translator to read, original in Italian), with a leather carry case and better buttpad about $2000, I think they quoted me 1350 Euro's

Also try http://www.truvelo.co.za/armoury/a_206.html in South Africa, they have a Branch office in Germany and dealers in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Malaysia, India, Turkey, Germany and Japan.

Wouldn't be surprised if a few are on close protection duty in Iraq by now, maybe some will find thier way back privately ;)

No Neosteads for us!

The NS2000 was shut out by the ATF. THey decided it was "non-sporting". It's hard to see what's so sporting about a Benelli R4, but hey...whatever.

BTW, there is a nice bullpup stock based on the WA-2000 design available for the 10/22. Also another based on the Steyr AUG. Both cost a LOT though.

Heck...there's even an MG-34 kit for the 10/22. What they won't think of next!
