Bullseye for 40S&W?

Anyone running this combination with 165gr or 180gr bullets?

I have a list of about 275 40S&W IPSC Loads compiled by Jeff Maass. It lists the shooter, bullet-mfg and weight, powder and charge, OAL, velocity,and notes. Noone is using Bullseye.

Upon reading this, I presumed there was a good reason, and simply did not load w/bullseye. I have loaded every bullet weight of a dozen or so mfgs, with about 12 different powders.

Bullseye is too fast for the .40 S&W. There are too many other good choices. Listen to Shoney.

A long time ago I tried bullseye for 40S&W, for purely economical reasons. It was very dirty IMO. Accuracy was fine, but now it sits on my shelf. How's that for economy?

When I first started reloading, I decided to stick with powders that spill if I get a double. I haven't had any doubles, but know others who have. I have a friend who likes to say about some calibers: "fill 'er up with Herco". It sounds like bad advice until you stop to think about what he means by it.

Thanks for the response. Interestingly enough, the manufacturer of Bullseye seems to think it's OK to use in 40S&W, and provides load and pressure data for it.

And to all who've expressed concern for my well being; I appreciate the sentiment but I've been reloading now for about twenty five years or more and am pretty comfortable with my process. Not sayin' that I'm perfect, but with close to 100,000 rounds loaded I've had one squib (shoulda used a magnum primer for the powder selected) and no double charges.

I'm OK with using a powder that *can* be doubled so long as its other attributes (velocity, cleanliness, accuracy, economy) warrant its use. I like Bullseye for 45ACP because it give good velocities and minimal flash with moderate loadings. I was hoping to get a similar result in 40S&W...

Eh - I've got Unique and PowerPistol on the shelf that I don't use much with 45ACP. I may start with them first.....

I see no reason why you could not use it in the .40, as you pointed out Alliant shows data for it. I've not used it in the .40 only because I don't have one but have used it in practically every thing else. I have used it in the 9MM with 115 XTP's at 1250 fps ( 5.0 grs) and it burns clean and is very accurate out of my Hipower. Velocity extream spread was 25 fps and sd was 10 fps, all in all a very uniform accurate load. The 9mm like the .40 is a fairly high intensity cartridge. I think BE tends to be dirty when used in low pressure target type loads but like other powders tends to clean up at higher pressures. I also think most reloaders are afraid of it because it's a "fast" powder and takes up so little room in the case. All I know is I like it and buy it in 4 lb. kegs. Good luck. Nick

I reload 155 grain FMJ's in my 40 with Unique. 7 grains of Unique behind the 155 FMJ is a great load. Unique is a very versatile powder, its just about the perfect burn rate for the 40 S&W, if you do double charge a case with Unique, it will spill. 7 grains fills the case about 2/3rds.

I am currently loading a 165 gr. JHP with 6.8 gr. of Unique for my 40 S&W SIG P229. The round is very consistent and appears to be burning clean.

Bullseye works fine in 40 as long as you use good reloading practices. Screw it up and bad things will happen, but that is also going to happen with a whole list of other powders too.

I wouldn't go buy Bullseye for 40, but if you (like me) have a BUNCH of it on hand use it. It is fairly dirty compared to some of the newer powders, but it works fine.
