The ongoing thread about clean burning powders has been interesting for me, as a relatively new reloader. I've loaded perhaps 1000 rounds of .45 ACP since last November, using Bullseye exclusively and I have been really pleased with how clean it is.

I have read that Unique or Clays is cleaner yet, but I'm comparing my loads to the WWB and Remington bulk .45ACP loads. 100 rounds of WWB would leave the front end of my stainless 1911 covered with soot, to the point you could not see the color of the stainless steel underneath the soot. Remington was even worse.

In contrast, 100 rounds of the Bullseye load leaves very little residue on the outside of my pistol. For the time being, I'm loving it!

That is all. :)

National Match

4.7gr Bull over 230 ball ammo was what the Army used for national match prior to WWII and its been good ever since. :D

IMHO Clean / Dirty is well, relative:)

If you are loading a near maximum load with a plated/jacketed bullet, All powders are very clean.

If you are loading a mid range load with a plated/jacketed bullet not quite as clean.

If you are loading a light target load with hardcast lead bullets, all loads tend to be dirty.

Like Master Blaster said, clean/ dirty is relative. I think a lot of people that complain about certain powders being dirty are just nitpicking. You're going to get a certain amount of residue from all powders. I've heard people on this and other forums complain about certain loads with certain powders that I have found to be just the opposite.

Lots of guys go on and on and on and on about cleanliness when they should be worried about PERFORMANCE!!!!!

Performance is where our attention should really be focused.

I have found that Clays shoots a little softer in 45 acp than Bullseye, and is a little cleaner than Bullseye. Win/win situation there, but it will lead barrels sometimes where Bullseye won't. So for some loads Clays is better and for some Bullseye is better.

I will not sacrifice performance for a little bit cleaner gun at the end of a range session, that would be truly silly. I still load a LOT of Bullseye, and wouldn't want to be without it.

That's exactly what I load. After a 2700 match using rounds loaded with Bullseye, my right hand was filthy and I had particles of unburned powder on my arm. Using N310 is like night and day.

Unless my loads cause barrel leading, my proceedure for cleaning is the same whether the gun is pretty clean, petty dirty or filthy. Not much time is required for any normal clean-up.

Mr. Monk on the other hand . . . . :)

I have had good luck (good performance) from Bullseye in both 9x19mmP and .45ACP. I have tried a lot of the powders that are supposed to be "better" than Bullseye in these cartridges, but I've found that I can reach the velocities that I've selected with a pretty clean gun after the smoke clears (figuratively speaking, of course :) ) with Bullseye.

Being a firm believer in that old phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," I've not fixed it...
