Well for a long time I have been interested in whips. Just think they are very cool, hold a lot of power in such a small package.

Wondering if anyone here has any experience with such a tool, or some of the better places to buy a bullwhip/what to look for in a whip.

Any information or tips would be helpful!

Have always heard kangaroo is the best leather for the job, and David Morgan is the name in whip makers. But, not sure I would want to spend $700+ and not even like it. I just enjoy trying new... activities. :D

I've played with them some ---- my favorite is a "snake whip" --- only 5-8 feet long and almost no handle ---- you can coil it up in a VERY small package that fits in the back pocket of most jeans ---- as the name inferes , the Boys Down Under use them for killing all manners of Pit Vipers etc. -- As I said ,there really is no " handle" but the butt you hold is filled with lead powder/shot --- can also be used as a Blackjack/Sap.

Later today ---- I will post some whip links --- my "snaker" is 6 & 1/2 feet long and cost about $150 , five years or so ago --- And , YES , its made from Roo hide.

I am a big fan of the bullwhip and snake as well. My main "go-to" is a uncommon kind called a "black snake." The pommel has a steel ball-bearing woven into it for... harder things the cracking end can't neutralize. My particular one is made of black 550 paracord. This is a trade-off compared to leather. Leather has far superior performance, but nylon is nearly immune to moisture that would ravage leather and it does not require as much maintenance. It also cost a lot less, mine was $99.

This site has some great techniques on how to crack effectively: http://www.bullwhip.org/

Never hit anyone, but I have used one once to scare vandals on my family's property when I was a kid. If anything they are a great way to scare the **** out of miscreants.

I've always been quite fascinated by whips. Like the OP I'd be quite interested in more info. I caught a bit of some history/military/science/discovery channel documentary that explained the amazing physics that make the whip as powerful as it is.

No talk about whips with out Lash Larue

I've never used one but you'll want to study up a bit before just starting to swing. Those things can get moving at over the speed of sound and you do not want to hit yourself with it.

My dad actually had a big bull whip he used on cattle when I was growing up on the farm!
So I went through a Lash LaRue phase learning how to use it.

I'm here to tell you, it's a lot harder then it looks to hit what you aim at and make it crack when you're 12 years old!

There will be blood if you get your ear in the way!

I'm serious, btw. Brimmed hats help protect your ears, and some kind of durable eye-wear is a good precaution. Of course never crack like River Phoenix does in Last Crusade (Up then down rapidly with the forearm like a jump rope) or you will get it in the face just like he did.
