ATF has examined several firearms accessory devices that are designed and intended to accelerate the rate of fire for semiautomatic firearms.

a part or parts designed and intended to convert a weapon into a
machinegun, i.e., a weapon that will shoot automatically more than one shot, withoutmanual reloading, by a single function of the trigger,
is a machinegun under the NFA and
GCA.

Provided the shooter maintains finger pressure against the stock, the weapon will fire repeatedly until the ammunition is exhausted or the finger is removed. The assembled device is advertised to fire approximately 650 rounds per minute.

One such device consists of the
following components: two metal blocks; the first block replaces the original
manufacturer’s V-Block of a Ruger 10/22 rifle... read on at the link!

I read the same words you read but couldn't see anything in them to support a conclusion that they make "Bump firing illegal." They are talking about "a part or parts designed and intended to convert a weapon" to bump fire. The ruling applies specifically to "accessory devices that are designed and intended to accelerate the rate of fire for semiautomatic firearms" so as to skirt two laws.

The best way to show the BATFE that gun owners who oppose this ruling mean business might be to refuse to own a gun unless the BATFE retracts it. That would show them the kind of stuff we're made of. If we aren't allowed the means to convert a Ruger 10/22 to bump fire, no gun is worth owning. The romance is over.

Yes, yes, it is.

The BATFE today ruled a practice common in gun circles catering to those who own assault rifles, known as "bump firing," to be illegal and to constitute a de facto machine gun. Effective February 19th, 2007, prosecution will be sought against anyone in possession of a known bump firing device. To ensure compliance with the new law, BATFE has instructed owners of semiautomatic firearms to chop off each of their thumbs, place them in individual plastic baggies, Ziploc™ brand preferred, and take them to the nearest BATFE amnesty field collection center.

:(

They just sort of make up rules as they see fit it seems. Bump firing does not fit in the multiple shots at ONE pull of the trigger-unless you use the illegal shoe string machine gun :what:

This seems a little funny, its more of a technique than a full modification to the weapon as I understand it. My friend fires multiple rounds with his SKS when he doesnt shoulder the weapon is that considered bump firing.Next a double tap is going to be full auto. Geez.

DIdn't you know? Having fingers, pants with belt loops, and a semi-auto rifle is considered constructive possession. ;)

The fact of this "ruling" is that it changes the fundamental philosophy that "a pull of the trigger" is the standard to an "action of the trigger FINGER" is now the measuring stick.

First, that's simply not what the law says. The ATF, anti-american jerkweeds that they may be, are as often as not enforcing the law as written by the liberal, handwringing, nanny-state knuckleads that they are. In this case, however, the ATF is re-writing the law to meet their needs.

Second, if unchallenged, this new "definition" puts ALL semi auto firearms in jeopardy.

And finally, remember that "Inconvenient Truth" known as the Bill of Rights?

DROP-IN" full-auto conversion device

http://www.ak-47.net/ak47/autowerks.html

Unmodified semi-auto weapon will continuously fire fully automatic until secondary trigger is released. Fire 600rpm bursts, or empty entire magazines.

This is true full-auto! This is NOT a slam-fire conversion. This is NOT a crank. This is NOT a triburst. This is NOT a Tac-Trigger. This is NOT a Hell-fire/Hell-storm 2000; This is NOT a static-fire gimmick. None of these are full-auto conversions. THIS IS. This is the ONLY way to convert a semi-auto AK style weapon into a machinegun without permanently drilling & machining the receiver and installing full-auto parts.

does anyone know what this thing really is?

yea, probably.

after all its not the first time these hands were mistaken for deadly weapons:evil:

So now apparently possession of thumbs is "Constructive Possession"?

Special Liasion for the BATFE John Harcourt, in a brief interview on the steps of the ATF Branch Office, stated that the agency's recent decision had been reached as a result of several months of non-partisan discussion panels, as well as a review of prior BATFE rulings.

"Let me ask those who are calling for an investigation of the agency's ruling this. What are thumbs designed for? We're not trying to take anyone's duck hunting gun away here. The fact of the matter is that thumbs are used every day to tie shoelaces. BATFE has previously determined that shoelaces pose a grave public hazard in the hands of gang members and street thugs. It only makes sense to pursue the same restrictions on thumbs.

Thumbs are intrinsically capable of being used for bad as well as for good, and we feel that the potential for thumbs in the wrong hands [of] causing crime is much higher than for honest purposes."

Amnesty field collection points have been set up in Easton, Baltimore, Pikesville and Salisbury. The amnesty period lasts until February 19th.
