Looking at some spent 223 brass I noticed that some cases have some burn marks on the extractor groove and rim. This was new LC brass from a new AR15. I don't remember seeing this on other pieces of brass so i'm wondering if this is normal. It actually looks like the gases in the upper from cycling the bolt.

Funny. I'm at the other end. I'm new to reloading for centerfire rifles, and I just took notice of how clean my 223 brass is. Just a tiny bit of powder right at the mouth, not even halfway down the neck. Otherwise the brass looks exactly the same as before it was fired. I'm considering resizing without even tumbling.

I'm not at home so I don't have my load data but I am using 55gr FMJ from Montana, H335 (I think 23gr).
The two ports on the carrier appear to be clear. I can easily see the gas rings when I pull the bolt back.
I should add that i don't see this on every casing. Probably 5 out of 30.
