When I was young living on the farm I carried a Barlow. I have no idea what happened to it. Cruising the pawn shops I found one like the one I had. Something didn't seem right but I gave them the $10 anyway. Someone had polished the heck out of the blade and when I got it home I found out why. Under the 14 power loupe I was able to make out stainless, pakistan.:banghead:

Oh well, I am still way ahead on pawnshop knives.

For $10, it's probably still worth that. No, not a great knife, but maybe worth the price...

I still think you did okay with the price. Price wise it is in the same area as many Rough Rider and Frost Cutlery folders. My first adult sized folder was a Case Barlow when I was a 9-10 years old. Loved that knife. A lot of folks like to dig up the Imperial Barlow from years ago which sold for a dollar or two in the 60's. The Barlow pattern is a little less common than it used to be. But I like the more recent Barlow that Great Eastern Cutlery made.

I purchased the really oversized Barlow pattern that Remington distributed. Discovered it is just a bit large for me to EDC.

I had a cheap Barlow that I bought at a drug store when I was a kid.

Wish I still had that knife.
Heck, I wish I could even REMEMBER what happened to that knife.
It got me out of a scrape or two.

Many years down the road, I picked up a replacement that I'm sure is a bit of an upgrade from the drug store model. Doubt it will ever need to get me out of any scrapes at this point, but you never know...

Nostagia shot...

I had my share of "barlow" knives as a youth. Seems I was motivated by Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer (anyone remember which?). Then the Coast-to-Coast hardware store put up a Case rotating display case and I was driven to manic levels of produce picking to feed a whole new "jones" for those beauties.

Case makes a nice Barlow but it almost a 100 dollar bill. I take a small mag glass with me and check them out. Saber and Imperial are the ones I find the most. They have all took good edges and they are my work in the yard knifes since I paid as 2 bucks each for them. Keep looking if your like me you stay ahead of the Pawn man.

Well you win some, you lose some. I nearly got burned on a balisong yesterday. I saw a bali in a case at a pawn shop and the tag said $99. So needless to say, I was intrigued. On inspection I found a recurve tanto blade with the BM logo and model 525, nothing else. Never heard of that model bali. I know the 525 is a folder. The overall quality of the knife screamed fake and I of course passed. I told the guy at the counter it was a fake but he just put it back in the case. Had I been a BM or knife newb I would've bought it in a heartbeat.

I still have the Cattaragus Barlow that I had as a kid but needless to say it's been long retired.
I own several others though ranging from a Case that I purchased years ago to Imperials and even a Cutco.
Time was when every kid had a Barlow and we EVEN took them to school.
Google "Barlow Knives" where you'll find something for every taste and pocketbook.
