Burying handguns

actually, if there was some way to make sure it wouldn't get dug up by some kid or criminal, I think it would be cool to put an M4 in a time capsule of some sort and bury that deep down hoping somebody will dig it up in say 300 years. Of course there probably won't be any ammo for it by then.... but it'd still be cool.

I'm not going to do it.... but maybe the military can donate a broken M4 :)

wishful thinking...

It would probably be OK unless they built a school over it.

Gawd, the panic when it's discovered!

Unless, of course, you buried it 1000 feet deep.

Our country heads every day down the road to totalitarianism and very few truly fight to limit government powers and preserve individual freedom. The need to someday have weapons that are hidden from the government is not a far fetched idea.
I would even go so far as to say the founding fathers would smile, no.. insist on such an idea given the current political climate and direction.

Having said that however, the time and way to fight this battle is now through your elected representatives. If you go around burying guns and aren't writing letters and making phone calls you are a fool and likely your efforts will be too little too late when and if you ever decide to dig them up.

Funny thing is that they are still find WW II caches of weapons all over Britain.

I'd vote for something sturdy and waterproof.

A short length of PVC pipe with end caps glued on would work. I'd give it a good greasing up first, and a desiccant package wouldn't hurt any, as another poster suggested.

But, really, I am not a fan of burying guns. I don't think its a good idea. never know who might did it up.

''Hanging in a tree''

Now that is one good of an idea. Years ago when I was playing OPFOR we overran a position and Blufor left their M60 unattended. We were not allowed to take weapons so I stuck it up in a tree about 8 feet off the ground. They went crazy looking for it and never did find it. The OC finnally called us and had to ask where it was.

There is absolutely no need to bury guns.
Read Mao Tse Tung's book on Guerilla Warfare and you will have all of the answers you need on where and how to acquire arms.

Burying one

I'd use either a plastic ammo box with the o-ring or a scuba box as long as it has the o ring.

Years ago a cousin of mine found an ithaca 37 hangin' in a tree. I think it's still in the family.

 Help me to understand.

See if I'm following you--you bury a handgun b/c guns become outlawed. At what point would you dig it up? In other words, would you just leave it buried or what? What would dictate the time to dig it up?

Furthermore, if you felt that the times were such that digging it up would be required, don't you think you may be a tad undergunned?

I'm missing something here...:uhoh:

So, as I understand it, the best way to bury one is....DEEP IN THE WAISTBAND! :neener:

I could see someone burying their handguns when a search for them by the authorities appears imminent, only to dig one up afterwards to use for self defense. It all depends on if you would rather be dead or possibly in jail.

Burying long guns however, once outlawed it seems to me they would only be useful as part of some sort of organized resistance. Better hope a whole lot of other people had the same idea and intent, not to mention the courage to follow through.

The definitive guides to burying guns can be found in survivalist articles from the 90's.

The AWB had passed, an outright ban was expected next, and Americans went out and bought over 4 million rifles. (Not to mention all the EBRs bought since)

Since then, the AR & AK have essentially become mainstream.

Technicalities and legalease aside I do not think reliance on gps or metal detectors or any tech stuff is a good idea. The best place would be some place far far from civilization because people constantly reshape the land. I have seen them take HUGE stony hills and flatten them and deep deep valleys and fill them here in Atlanta. Always wondered if someone had buried the silver to keep it out of yankee hands in a safe place. In the book Papillon they pulled off a robbery and buried the loot besides a road. Two years later he came back and they had widened the road. Cortez lost an enormous gold treasure on the causeway trying to get his ass out of the Aztec capitol and it is still according to all history somewhere under Mexico City.

Well according to an Aussie friend of mine , the burying thing is a fact for them . The inside joke is that they ask each other have they oiled their garden lately .

We're a ... a .... a Republic ???

Gee.

Someone actually said we're a Republic.

All I hear lately from even Republicans is that we are a Democracy.

I don't think it's a bad idea to bury a gun.
Don't forget the ammo!

Grease the gun with regular grease everywhere inside out.
Then put it in the plastic bag and bury it not on your own property.
Don't use GPS. It could be turned off, or your unit's memory could lead the people you hid that gun from right where it is!

Burying it in a fencerow is generally a good idea. Usually there is enough stray metal on most fence rows that no one with a metal detector will bother digging up every hit the detector makes.

Greased pistols and rifles, minus wood stocks, in heavy duty plastic bag, all placed in pvc pipe sealed on both ends, 6 ft under on high ground away from water drainages. Make shure only family members know location on family property.

Some may think that doing this may be sillly but if what happend in canada happens here?

There ya go, there's a tin foil hat emoticon

Another thing one could do is install a schroeder valve on one of the caps of the pvc tube, pull a vacuum, and then refill it with nitrogen. -4 PSI vacuum should work quite well, and then a +5 PSI boost of nitrogen. Dessicant packs would be nice, too. Make sure everything is good and greased before they're slipped into the tube.

Gee, I was saving my pennies to buy another gun.

Maybe I should buy a metal detector instead.

If the time comes when we need to bury our guns, then the time has past on when we needed to use them.
