[blockquote](01-29) 09:27 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

The Bush administration issued a veto threat Thursday against legislation introduced in Congress that would scale back key parts of the anti-terrorism Patriot Act.

In a letter to Senate leaders, Attorney General John Ashcroft said the changes contemplated by the Security and Freedom Ensured Act, or SAFE, would "undermine our ongoing campaign to detect and prevent catastrophic terrorist attacks."

If the bill reaches President Bush's desk in its current form, Ashcroft said, "the president's senior advisers will recommend that it be vetoed."

The threat comes a week after Bush, in his State of the Union address, called for Congress to reauthorize the Patriot Act before it expires in 2005.[/blockquote]
I haven't figured out what to do this November. Nice to see the Bush administration starting out the year with two major blunders that have virtually convinced me to vote Libertarian.

First was the Moon/Mars plan fiasco. The moon is primarily useful for He-3, not for "experience" or for a launch site that can be used to travel or maintain a "base" on Mars. Anyone who's read any of Zubrin's The Case for Mars knows that there's no necessity or significant advantage to launching Mars missions from the moon. What we need to get to Mars is motivation, not a moon base. And the timescale and vagueness of the plan is such that it's clearly just an election-season ploy.

Now this. Bush is threatening a veto of any reduction in strength of the PATRIOT Act.

Combine this with his promise to sign the AWB if Congress passes it, and I'm fresh out of reasons to vote for him. He hasn't done anything to reduce Social Security payouts, balance the budget, or anything else particularly useful. About the only useful thing he's done is stand up to the UN and depose Saddam. That's done.

His grammar stinks. His advisors... well, I haven't heard much about Colin Powell since last Spring; Condi Rice got put in a bad situation and she's paying for it politically. Rumsfeld is seen as an instrument of Satan by most of the Left. And let's not forget Dick "Death's Door" Cheney... not really an advisor, but has stayed behind the scenes for the most part.

Why vote for Bush in November?

not to hijack the thred, but was the Patriot II passed? I heard that it was snuck through right after we got Saddam.

The Project for a New American Century needs that legislation in place to further their agenda, I thought it was a testiment to the congress that it was not passed on the first try... even a few republicans voted against it, thank god.

very scary stuff.

I am wondering if this sudden Space Exploration announcement is not less a attempt to potray 'vision' on the presidents part as much as it is a basis to set up a planetary missile defense grid... kind of getting his foot in the door.

I will NOT be voteing for Bush, I cannot.

Bush threatens veto

The only reason Bush wants to establish a presence on the moon is that he knows that if he immigration proposals goes thru - his family and friends will need a place to live because he will have ruined this country in his pandering for Chicano votes.

I supported this guy when he ran 4 years ago, both with door to door canvasing in my neighborhood and with moneytary donations. It won't happen this time around. He's NOT getting my vote. I'm sure I won't vote for the Demohog running, so it'll probably go to the Libertarian party.

Why vote for Bush in November?

Umm, 'cause he's better than the alternatives, right? Isn't he? I dunno anymore.

I've checked out the various parties. I'm not sure I like any of them these days. The Constitution Party is a bit too religious for me. I'm not anti religion, but according to what I read on their webpage, it sounds like they're going to create a theocratic govt, the Liberarian Party is a bit too week on border control and the like, and the primary Republican candidate disgusts me on several topics (fiscal responsibility, immigration, 2nd Amendment).

Can't we get Alan Keyes to run an effective campaign? :(

Tag- most of Patriot II was signed on the day they announced the capture of Hussein. Kept it off the radar pretty well too.

That's interesting,

I went to a presentation on the PNAC last night and one of the speakers presenting on civil rights said it had been rejected. I remember reading somthing about it being slipped through unannounced, which furthers the evidence that the PNAC is alot more than a 'think tank'. It's almost a government existing outside the government.

Please excuse any future post's I may make on this as it scares the hell out of me. :uhoh:

No difference to His Royal Billness anymore.

Politicos :barf:

If you EVER had the idea that there is a government "by the people, for the people" take a sober look around and throw your dream away.

Tyme, sadly I agree with you. And I really did want to continue supporting him. But I'd like to be proud of my vote afterward. I hope he sees the erosion starting in his base of support in time to reverse, but I don't see any sign of it. :banghead:

I think I might vote my conscience this year. The Bush administration has gone too far. Patriot and Patriot II, now this, the illegal alien fiasco, the economic situation we are in now, etc., etc., etc.

I cannot vote for someone that has run us into the ground and I cannot vote for any of the Dems because I can't stand any of them. Edwards, maybe. But he comes off as the next Slick Willy to me.

Obviously, you are one of those leftist, anti-american, veggie eating, Bush haters. :neener:

(that's a joke son! and not on you)

Yeah I'm finding myself a man without a party. While I like Bush's foriegn policy and the tax cuts, his domestic policy is awful. I was willing to let him slide if Patriot I was allowed to expire. After all we are fighting a war and I am capable of being patient. Now we have Patriot II? Likewise it would be one thing if he was busting the budget winning the war, but he isn't. He's busting the budget supporting utter foolishness like mars missions and "drug reform". Now I know what the liberals felt like when Clinton passed welfare reform on them...

Bush is going to get my vote he's going to have to start making some serious changes.

Bush is hosing off his base because he thinks its is necessary and that he will get away with it. "Where else they gonna go" is written on his mirror.

I think he has made a bad miscalculation. I think he'll figure it out and then do what he is so good at doing. He will execute a perfect for "About. Face." The guy demonstrates an ability to cut his losses with little fanfare.

I look forward to the same moves. If he senses for one second that his base is getting wobbly he will start the pandering process. After all Bush is convinced his second election will be a squeaker and his is sucking up to every Democrat groups hoping (against reality in my view) to peel off enough votes to win.

I personally have had an uneasy feeling about the guy but I was willing to let him hang himself; which is what he has done in marvelous form.

I decided almost a year ago not to vote for him again. He makes that decision easier every day.

What are the odds of the repeal reaching his desk?

Bush is set to announce a big increase in the budget for the National Endowment for the Arts for next year.

Like we really need more "artistic" photos of crucifixes in glasses of urine.

Opposition to the NEA used to be a litmus test for Republicans.

I will not vote for these people again.

Tag...what's PNAC?

As for the threatened VETO....let me get this straight.

Congress votes on, and passes, an evil law. Presumably they did this intentionally.

Bush signs it. Presumably, that was intentional too.

Suddenly, Congress has an attack of conscience, and seeks to undo it?

For Congress to have an attack of conscience in so short a time would be unprecedented, and a sign of the apocalypse.

Similarly, they passed and signed McCain-Fiengold with their fingers crossed behind their backs, hoping to sluff the whole political mess off their plate and onto the SCOTUS, which then turned around and pooped the whole mess on us.

The bottom line is this:

Both the Congress and the POTUS need to stop screwing around and approving legislation if they "don't really mean it."

That might take some integrity and fortitude, but I've never heard of an elected official who DIDN'T promise integrity and fortitude at some point.

The reality is that we didn't send them to Washington to play political patty cake games with each other. These aren't games, they're LAWS, and people can go to JAIL for breaching them.

LAWS are NOT POLITICIAN'S PLAYTHINGS.

Shame, shame, shame on the ALL.

Looks like some judges are seeing the Patriot Act for what it really is though... This isn't much, but it's a step in the right direction.

"A federal judge has declared unconstitutional the part of the USA Patriot Act that bars giving expert advice or assistance to groups designated foreign terrorist organizations."
