It is a very dangerous precedent, but I guess Bushmaster thought they would lose in court given the dealer's dubious record of playing fast and loose with its records. I don't know what evidence anyone had that Bushmaster knew or should have known about the dealer's problems, but the dealer having a couple of hundred rifles unaccounted for certainly does not look good from any point of view.
I am not sure how the precedent will affect other cases, but you can bet the Brady gang will keep up the pressure in court against gun makers, gun dealers and gun owners, while giving criminals and murderers a pass. I still have the deep suspicion that the anti-gun gang hired the beltway snipers to shoot Ms. Townsend into the governor's office, but I can't prove that.
