I have a Bushnell Banner 4-12x Dusk Till Dawn mounted on my Ruger PCC (9mm). I went to zero some of my rifles this weekend as I had switched some scopes around and ran into something I've yet to encounter which considering I've only been shooting for two years or so is what one might expect. I, like a jackass, assumed that I wouldn't run into any issues and only brought a box of ammo for each gun which normally is enough to zero and then have a little fun but not this time. Extra ammo would have allowed me to switch the scopes around and determine if it was the scope or user error.
At 50 yards using my PCC on 4x I was shooting 1-2 inch groups with ease. When I increased magnification my groups opened up to significantly. I also brought along my Savage B-22 (.22lr) which has a cheap(er) 3-9x Vortex scope that came in a package deal with my 10/22 and I did not have the same issue when going from 3 to 9 at 50 yards.
The little red dots are the size of dimes.
The group on the right center is 6 shots (I got happy and pulled the last shot) at 4x from 50 yards.
The group on the bottom center is what I shot when I switched from 4x to 12x.
The shots in the center and left are me getting zeroed at 50 after loosely zeroing at 25 yards.
The top center is my Savage B-22 getting zeroed at 50. It was a bit windy (15mph gusts) so I figured I'd come back on a better day and really get her zeroed properly.
I've not run into an issue like this with any of my scopes cheap though they may be. I had the Bushnell on my 10/22 and Savage B-22 and don't remember or at least didn't notice such a shift in groups when increasing magnification. I have a 30$ Bariska scope that also never had this issue on anything I mounted it on. If I have time next weekend I'll switch the scopes around and see if I still have the same issue.
The Bushnell has a parallax adjustment and the Vortex does not. Is it possible that the/a parallax setting/adjustment (I might have shifted it to 50 yards at 50 yards, but at 25 I had it on unlimited) is responsible for what happened?
What say ya'll
Is my scope broken?
Is this normal for a cheap scope?
Is there something I'm missing?
