I have a DPMS 18 inch barreled mid length gas AR with a 4-16x scope on it now. I want a little bit longer range and nicer scope than what I currently have. I am looking for something with a max magnification around 20x+ but what concerns me is the minimum magnification being too much. The use will be bench, prone, varmint hunting and maybe, just maybe big game hunting. (may be too many hats for the rifle to wear)

I am looking at the Bushnell 3200 7-21x here: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=460354

and the Bushnell 4200 6-24 side focus here: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=895285

I am not interested in any other scope at this time. I really like the price of the 7-21x model but I am concerned about 7x being too much for a minimun magnification.

I also found this great comparison of magnification and clarity here: http://field-target.mforos.com/931539/6123322-visores-bushnell-elite/

Do you guys think the 7-21 is too much low power manification?

i have the 6500, and the 16x on that is more than sufficient to shoot at 900yds with my .308 and get a good group.

Especially if you're going to use it for hunting, I'd be more worried about keeping my lower end magnification than upper. i believe the 4200 series has a 4-16x model, you might look at that.

*edit to add* apologies, just saw you already have a 4-16x on there. if you're unhappy with that, then I vote go with the 6x.

I had a 4-16x Centerpoint on my LR-308 and it was a good range of useful power. I generally used 4-14x because 15-16x got a little hazy and lost contrast. I'd assume better glass wouldn't do that but it was still very workable. I think low powered scopes such as the 1-4x and 2-10x are perfect for most rifles and situations. unless you are shooting bugs at 1000yrds 10x is generally enough power.

I have a Center Point 4-16x on my bolt action 308 and it works great for it's purpose. I have a Mueller 4-16x on the DPMS right now it has some defects in the glass and 16x isn't powerful enough for what I want. I want to be able to see the bullet holes in paper at 200 yards. I guess to make things easier I will reserve the Howa for big game hunting and keep the DPMS for target and varmint shooting.
