Is it legal? Here is the entire MN law for knives.

Minnesota - Section 609.66. Dangerous weapons. Subdivision 1.
Acts prohibited. Whoever does any of the following is
guilty of a misdemeanor...

(4) manufactures, transfers, or possesses ... a switch blade knife opening automatically; or

(5) possesses any other dangerous article or substance for the purpose of being used unlawfully as a weapon against another; or

I am guessing a butterfly knife is not considered a switch blade or gravity knife, but I wanted to make sure before carrying one 24/7. Am I correct to assume that in my state I can carry any sharp pointy thing including swords, daggers, fixed blade knives, double edged, serrated, curved, etc etc. Any legth, size or shape is good to go?

Another question how does the local ordinance thing work? My city, Plymouth, and county, Hennipen, do not mention knives so I guess I am clear. Does that mean when I drive to school I will pass through five different sets of local laws, each one capable of making me a criminal?

If anyone is wondering, I am just trying out a butterfly knife, I may switch to a normal folding knife.

As an update, I bought the knife, a budget balisong(butterfly knife) for only $18.50 plus shipping from www.1sks.com I like it enough I am going to buy a benchmade when I get some money. To anyone thinking of butterfly knives/balisongs I suggest you try one. They lock up like a fixed blade, even this cheapy is solid.

I had to round the pins over with a hammer because they were only riveted on one side, and the pins decided to walk half way out after about twenty openings.

The knife is legal in MN, but a cop, especially a MN one may confiscate it anyway. :fire:

In many areas a big part of the "knife law" is it's use and design. Butterfly knives appear designed primarly as a weapon and that is why they fail the subjective test in many areas. I always recommend a folder that doen't look like a ninja store knife.
