buying a 0.22 rifle in seattle

My bf and I are heading to the Yukon, but we ran into a snag... I wanted a cheap-but-shoots-straight 0.22 lr to use in the great white North, but California's waiting period is a pain and so I decided to buy en route. Turns out, dealers can't/won't sell to a CA driver's license. Don't even get me started about trying to buy in Canada. Ugh!

I'm in Seattle now, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a gun show along the way in the next day or two that carried private sales, or maybe an equivalent of craigslist for rifles???

What's a girl gotta do to peg a few bunnies these days? :)

Follow the rules of the state that you reside in. Oh, and prior planning is a must.....I can't believe this just came up and the waiting period is too much to tolerate. Was this trip planned yesterday? :rolleyes:

Go to the commercial fishing boat marina in Juneau AK. Look on the bulletin board.

Bear in mind that you are committing a Federal crime and it's not worth the consequences if you get caught. Don't do it.

Playing this as non-troll: I'm NOT going to the Legal forum to go to the Sticky that has all the BATFE regs. Hilary is welcome to do that. So, is it still correct than an out-of-state person can buy a long gun from a dealer in another state, if the NICS is passed? I've lost track of rules changes.

If so, Hilary can wait until arrival in Alaska. Being as how she's from California, and given my attitude about California anti-people gun laws, I think she oughta take up residence in Alaska, anyway. She'd be a lot better off...
 
Sadly, not headed to Yukon in the Alaska, but the Canadian version of the Yukon. As far as I know, even private rifle sales are heavily regulated in Canada... but as a non-resident I can bring a long gun in for 60 days with a $25 fee paid at the border. I've called Canadian firearms centre and they say it won't be a problem (they're even happy to check out specific models for you).

1) I don't want to do anything illegal, my understanding was it was legal to purchase a rifle from a private party in WA state?

Judging by a few dealers I've checked in WA state (and I'd be more than happy to be corrected on this), they won't sell to a CA driver's license. E.g. Walmart in Longview, WA will sell to a resident of almost state except CA, MA, and a few other annoying states.

2) What IS the status of federal dealer sales to CA residents in WA if I pass the NICS? (am I saying this right?)

And yes, this trip was planned on the last day :) I rented out my apartment for a month, my cushy vacation plans fell through, so I decided to set out for the wilds instead. I've got all the equipment I need except a small game rifle....

Who knows... might just do it. CA is feeling pretty cramped. :)
 
I do hope you have a larger caliber rifle for the Yukon.

There's more than "small game" up there.

If you buy the gun from a private party out of state, you can never make it legal in CA. The lame thing about CA (of the many) is that out of state transfers can only come from an FFL dealer to an instate FFL dealer, and only after the CA Dept of Justice has personally approved the entire thing.

So, that means you have two choices. Either buy the gun for your trip in WA from a private party, and sell it before you cross back into CA, or get used to buying guns from instate dealers only. It is sad but true... I recently tried to give a gun to my dad who lives in CA, after waiting for many months for the CA Dept of Justice, we gave up and he just ordered one locally.

The rabid CA socialists failed to push their illegal gun policies through legitimate methods, so they are now doing it with endless bureaucracies.

I gotta admit, this sounds like a troll.

You're talking about taking a firearm into Canada and that's simply not going to happen quickly I don't think. Are you sure they said you could do it at the border? My experience the one time I asked about it was that you had to do all the paperwork ahead of time. Maybe it's changed, dunno.

Unlike Mexico, the Canadians like income from traveling hunters more than they fear some well-to-do Gringo with a 20 Gauge, perhaps.:)
 
Long gun purchases outside of your home state can be made from an FFL dealer in another state, provided that the purchase is legal under the laws of both the state in which the sale is made, and the buyer's home state. It sounds like a sale would be illegal under CA law regardless since it didn't go through a CA FFL dealer. I think you are out of luck for purchasing. The result would be different if your home state was almost any (well, 45 or so) of the others.

And a face to face purchase in another state (not your home state) is, to my knowledge, illegal.

I would look to see if you can rent or borrow something while in Canada, Alaska or wherever.
 
Maybe you can borrow a 22 rifle from a friend. I don't know anything about taking a rifle into Canada. I know they get rather excited about handguns however from us Americans.
