Last Friday when I checked out my shotgun shells (target load) at Dick's sporting goods, I was asked about my citizenship. Since I'm a permanent resident but not citizen, I was required to show my green card and hunting license. Has any new law passed in Missouri regulating ammo purchase?

PS. I have been a permanent resident of US for 7 years and lived in St Louis area for 6 years. I had never had issue buying ammo before this incident.

Not aware of one. Could be some crazy store policy. I would find another place to buy ammo. Kinda makes ya wonder though.

For what it's worth, I am a citizen and I know many citizens and no one I know carries proof of citizenship. We carry driver's licenses.

Not sure why your ID isn't good enough, it's all everyone else has in their pocket. Sounds like you may have ran into a clerk who didn't like your look/accent/etc.

It's not just the clerk at check out. There was options on the touch screen of credit card machine to choose between citizen or not. Since I chose not (as I'm not a citizen), I was asked to show my green card and hunting license. The clerk had to ask a manager to help him navigate through manuals on his screen. Maybe they just upgraded their system since I had no problem to buy ammo two weeks ago from same store.

I guess it's just store policy. I'll shop somewhere else for my ammo from now on.

What kind of credit card machine asks if you're a citizen? Next time you see that just press "yes". Ridiculous thing to have to do.

Were you appyling for a credit card? Where I work our machines ask during credit applications. Another possiblility is the clerk accidentaly hit the credit application button and citizen is the first question

That would be a voilation of Federal law in this situation:
18 USC 922(a)(6) for any person in connection with the acquisition or attempted acquisition of any firearm or ammunition from a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector, knowingly to make any false or fictitious oral or written statement or to furnish or exhibit any false, fictitious, or misrepresented identification, intended or likely to deceive such importer, manufacturer, dealer, or collector with respect to any fact material to the lawfulness of the sale or other disposition of such firearm or ammunition under the provisions of this chapter;

"It is our company policy to sell ammunition and firearms to properly-licensed US citizens only."

So don't buy at AIM Surplus either.

Or OCM.

Actually, I believe every seller should ask if you have renounced your U.S. citizenship. Isn't that in the law still?

Looks like they are going overboard to protect themselves from unscrupulous action by the ATF :scrutiny:

Thanks for all the inputs.

I definitely will shop somewhere else. The only reason I bought my shot shells from Dick's is due to its $10 off $50 coupon. So I usually can get Remington Gun Club for $4.98 or Federal Top Gun for $4.58. Anyway, it's over. I'll move on.

@WOW6599, any good source for shot shell in the county?

It's probably nothing more than their stupid computer software written by some business college geeks.

Denny Dennis in Fenton is good, Cabela's is good if you find stuff on sale (high tax rate though) and WM is always cheap and close.
