Hi yall, I am 15 and just joined THR. I am planning on buying a new ak-47 type rifle. I have a price limit of about $550-$600. I have done my research and I am really considering getting an Inter Ordnance AK-47c from Buds Gun Shop. Does anyone know of a better AK for my price range or have experience with IO's AKs? I am getting this gun for home defense, hunting, and just having fun. I do not want to deal with converting Saigas and want something better than a WASR. Thanks in advance for your help.

I was never affluent enough to get my own residence when I was 15...I lived at home. Why not get a Saiga 12?

My Saiga-12 is apparently a "vodka special."

Fails to eject every time (yes, it is on the right gas setting), and getting it fixed is such a headache that I probably won't deal with it anytime soon. Gunsmiths want to charge me some outrageous fees as well, so I won't be dealing with them either.

To me, it's just unacceptable that terrible guns seem to routinely pass through their assembly line.

WASR's really are not all that bad. They will go bang everytime you pull the trigger and are accurate enough. You can add on a couple after market items and make it an excellent shooter. Recoil buffer, g2 trigger, etc.....

Look closely at the Zastava M70. IMO, Yugoslavian AKs are the best of the lot. A new one will cost a bit more than your budget, but you won't be disappointed.

Do be aware that you have to be 18 to legally purchase a rifle (and 21 to purchase a handgun) per Federal law. A parent may purchase a firearm for their minor child to use, but the parent must retain ownership of the firearm until the child turns 18, AFAIK. I am no lawyer, though.

Technically this will be my dads gun that I pay for. I have in my dads name a Remington 597 and a 1934 Mosin Nagant, and I just want a more efficient semi auto rifle for home defense than my .22 or bolt action . I like the Saiga 12's but thats for a later time. Does anyone own or have shot an Inter Ordnance ak-47c?

At 15 why are you the one worrying about Home Defense. And plus why bother with a semiauto rifle, get a good pump shotgun, reliable as all hell, you can add a rifled barrel and still get close to rifle quality accuracy out to atleast 100 yards. and you will still come out with the shotgun, barrel, and ammo well under your price budget. Not to offend you but it sounds like your looking for a range toy, Not a bad thing, I love my range toys. But a shotgun is a better TOOL for home defense

Ditto ^

Although dont let me discourage you from the purchase...... Be very carefull about thinking of using it for home defense.
1. Be sure of your target! (Dont accidently shoot a family member getting a glass of water at night....
2. the 7.62x39 will go through multiple walls, etc.

If you want an AK a shotgun will just not do!

I don't know much about the IO AK. AKs are fun guns to own. If was going to buy one I would get the Yugo M70 mentioned earlier with a full stock. I see allot of the underfolders but not many with a full wood stock. The Yugo is a superior AK. But they don't come with chrome lined barrels. Besides the Yugo I would get a Bulgarian AK. There one on Centerfire Systems website for $599.00. The model no. is SSR-85. Looks like a great rifle. I believe this rifle comes with some features the IO doesn't like a heavier receiver etc.

Heres a link: http://www.centerfiresystems.com/bulgarianakssr-85cpartakagun-ssr-1.aspx

When I was 15 I had an SKS (it wasn't for home defence). I don't think my father would have let me purchase an AKM at that age for hunting or otherwise...maybe, maybe not. But either way the AK isn't the best choice for home defence IMO (primarily due to the ammo and bullets is shoots). You may dream of mowing down bad guys, bustin a cap, moving room to room slicing the pie like in the video games & movies but the odds of you needing it are slim to none and its still far from practical for such matters.

If you have a Saiga 12 that won't cycle correctly, RAA has a good company doing warranty work; contact them and hopefully they will take care of it.

If you are 15, you can't buy a rifle through a gun store as someone mentioned. You can buy one from a private individual though.

If you give your dad money to make the purchase for you, it a straw purchase, which is illegal.

Your dad can buy the gun and give it to you as a gift though.

Saiga shotguns are apparently the only ones with these problems, and I received one too. First run a good bit of the high brass loads through it, it may smooth out after a 100 rounds or so of the good stuff. If that doesn't work it is time to add one (or in my case two additional gas ports), you will need to break the gun down and position the new port(s) just forward of the original holes. You need a drill press to get the angle right (same as original), and work slow to prevent the bit from bending from the angle (a center punch at the proper location also helps with this). After the modification mine works well and has not had a failure of any kind. Please note that this will void the manufacturers warranty. You can send it in for warranty repair, but this is likely to take a while, but I have heard that Cadiz Gun Works does good work.

To the OP: I have always said that it is wise to get about the cheapest AK available...as all will function fine and there is no reason to justify the cost of a "better AK". If I were in the market I would go with a Saiga and convert, or a WASR that is ready to go. :)

As 2 people have said my dad will be purchasing this gun as a gift for me. I know a shotgun is probably the best home defense weapon but the ak rifles are beasts. I am not wanting this as primarily a home defense gun but out of the guns my dad has, it seems like it would be better than my dads Mosin Nagant. I checked out the Bulgy one and it looks good too.

BTR -- You sure at 15 he can legally own a gun? That kinda rules out the private purchase...

You pretty sure you need to be 18 to own a firearm, I think its 16 to own air rifles, and I think there are some laws about providing minors with unsupervised access to firearms.

That makes it the purchaser's (parent's) firearm...though I see nothing wrong with it...his parents can give him the rifle when he comes of age. :)

I owned a wasr, NEVER EVER BUY ONE!!! Mine wouldnt feed hollow points and I got 6" groups at 25 yards! I personally don't care for the AK action anymore but if it is what your heart is set on get a saiga and do the conversion or don't and buy the really expensive mags. I have a psl that I love, but I will never again buy an AK in anything less than 7.62x54R. or .308/7.62x51

Sorry to get a bit off track here... there is an age limit for a air rifle?

My WASR-10 runs rather well...The furniture on it is not going to win any beauty contests, that's about the only bad thing i can say about mine. I happen to like the ugly furniture too.

Ok, I looked up the following from the ATF page. It doesn't say anything about purchasing from a private party, so I guess I am not really clear about that; it may be legal, but am not sure.:

(B14) May a parent or guardian purchase firearms or ammunition as a gift for a juvenile (less than 18 years of age)? [Back]

Yes. However, possession of handguns by juveniles (less than 18 years of age) is generally unlawful. Juveniles generally may only receive and possess handguns with the written permission of a parent or guardian for limited purposes, e.g., employment, ranching, farming, target practice or hunting.

Such is the laws that they deny rights to someone who wants to buy a weapon and appears to be mature enough to own but is not of age.

First this is my opinion and I base it on the fact that the SP researched what he wants and is asking for an opinion on what to get, now I understand there is laws against minors buy which is to supposedly protect from Darwinism.

Hey SP check out Atlantic Firearms and go to the AK forum, because we love the Kalashnikov. Atlantic has some good deals and if you are an AK forum member then you get a discount not much I believe but better than nothing.

Some of the dealers online sell century ak's which is basically hit and miss but they are cheap.

It is your choice enjoy your gift.
