As a lot of you may know, buying quality tactical flashlights is usually an expensive activity.
Because I am going to vacation in Thailand during this summer anyways, an idea came to me about buying flashlights in Duty Free areas.
I want to use a flashlight alongside my Handgun. I am interested in the ones with 800 lumens. I am aware that some people have claimed that 800 lumens is too bright, but I still want it because I will be using this flashlight for something else also.

Here are my main questions:
1. In your experience, do airports (domestic or foreign) sell tactical flashlights in their Duty Free shops?

2. If they do sell these tactical flashlights, are they less expensive than buying from elsewhere?

3. Is it true that German brands are the most affordable with great quality?

Forget the flashlight....what makes you think you can take a handgun to Thailand?

I'm not taking the handgun to Thailand. The handgun will remain in the USA with my family.
I'm only asking these questions because I have to go through the airports anyways. It would be nice if I can buy an inexpensive tactical/camping flashlights at these places.

Oh well...

800 lumens is very high for something that needs to be reasonably concealable. I currently use the Fenix PD32UE rated at 420 lumens...and it automatically steps down to around 300 after 5 minutes due to the heat build up. It's even brighter than I need for CHL. I'm happy with around 300 lumens.

I had an 800 lumen torch that ran off of three 18650 lithium rechargables. It was definitely not something I would carry with me. It was built more for the search and rescue side of the house.

Alrighty. Let 600 lumens be the max then.
What inexpensive brand would you recommend?

I didn't know that airports were like Amazon.com.
Maybe they sell anvils there too. save a couple bucks
There's probably some travelers who wanted to hike/camp in foreign countries. Maybe, like a lot of normal people, they forget to pack their flashlights. That, right there is a sizeable market for tactical/camping flashlights.

Afterall who would want to buy classy wine at airports? Apparently many people do so there are Duty Free shops.
And who would want to buy hiking backpacks at the airports? Apparently, there are many hikers because there are Duty Free shops for that too.

So let's say the airport does sell a couple flashlights. I think about 20,000 different models are available online. I don' think I'd worry about what's available at the airport.

why are you limiting yourself to buying in the duty free shop?

why not just buy one online and bring it in your carry-on luggage...?

I'm not limiting myself. I was just curious if buying at the Duty Free shops at the airport might be cheaper than buying on Amazon.
Airports are one of the places where most governments probably promote tourism, so I thought that things might be cheaper there.

They are cheaper.

Cheaper made, cheaper quality products, sold at higher prices to tourists trapped in an airport with no other shopping options.

I have never seen anything in a duty free shop or catalog that was anywhere near a "reasonable" price, never mind less than average (including tax). If you find one you'll pay 30% more than what you can get it for on Amazon, even with paying tax.

BTW- Have a great time in Thailand! It's one of my favorite places to go.

Thailand has great deals on bootleg dvds and golf clubs.

Duty free shops may save a few dollars on imported liquor and Cuban cigars, if you like. Electronics and the such, no.

Enjoy Thailand...

Um, go Amazon or even eBay. Wider selection. If it craps out, you can return it. Also, it's one less thing to carry on your trip back to the States.

I travel the world for business. I can tell you without a doubt, Duty Free shops are not a cheaper alternative. Either buy now or wait till your in Thailand where your dollar goes a long ways. However, be aware that you will have to differentiate cheap Chinese copies from the real deal.
