Buying partial boxes of bullets

Heh-heh, in regards to making sure what is in the box is what you think it is,… several years ago during the Nisqually Earthquake all of my little boxes of bullets came crashing down creating a huge mess in my reloading room. I did sit down with scales and calipers to sort them, but even now, twenty plus years later I keep a sharp eye on the bullets. Just habit now.

Another reason I shoot powder coated (color coded) bullets.

Where I work, most folks know I am a gun guy and that I reload. So I get asked a lot of questions about ammo and reloading components folks find when cleaning out "dad's/brother's/husband's cupboard" after he dies. Many times they bring it to work and give it to me thinking it's worth something or they just don't know what else to do with it. I know they mean well, so I generally always take it with a smile and a thank you, but for the most part, it sits on the shelf with all the other stuff I don't really want to mess with or I pass it along to someone else. As I said before, to attempt to develop a load for a small quantity of bullets that I may not ever use again, is just a waste of good powder and primers, as well as my time. Unless it's just to stuff some cases for the grandkids to throw lead at the gongs.

I have to wonder though about some very well known bullets - the 230gr FMJ-RN .45, or the Sierra 180gr BTHP-MK - which most of us have worked up loads for. Would I complain about being given 100 .45 FMJ bullets? Heck no! I wouldn’t complain about being given 20 or so Sierra MK either. I don’t see any reason to complain about being given anything, let alone reloading supplies.

I take anything that is offered free as far as reloading goes. Save enough to make load development worth while or to use as blasting ammo for friends.
On a couple occasions I have given a new reloader some random bullets so that they could actually load SOMETHING as no other options were available to them at that time. Might's well have been gold nuggets the way they reacted. Always pass on your good fortune. You might need the help next! Just sayi'n.
