buying used guns

Hello friends and neighbors // Sixgun Grunt,, Nice, I really like the research first part.

It has stopped me from impulse buying. I sometimes call a friend to check facts online if I'm at a gun show or traveling and find something interesting.

Do you think buying second hand guns is good for using them in a proper way?
Personly i think that you would better pay once but for a good desirable gun for avoid the complications conserning this topic

Not sure what your motives are, although I have my suspicions... none-the-less.... How to you suggest we purchase out or production guns? Not all things worth purchasing are new.

I have purchased far more used guns then new guns, and to be perfectly honest it is far simpler and easier and the government is not involved.

Thanks 6gun.

Private sales can put the buyer in a world of hurt. I would first suggest that the weapon serial number be checked to see if it was stolen. Most states have a stolen weapons on line site. Buying stolen property is a felony. Require seller identification that can be verified.

KNOWINGLY buying stolen property may be illegal.

Many states DO NOT offer this service that you mention.

Personally speaking, I would NEVER buy a firearm I know to be stolen...
And I would NEVER sell a firearm to someone that I KNOW to be prohibited.

So, if'n you'd like to sell me something that is stolen, best not to mention it to me.
Further, if you are prohibited from possessing an item that I am selling, you may want to keep that to yourself.
YMMV.

In Step 4, I would have added "check for well defined lands and grooves (unless it's a shotgun, of course), and evidence of pitting/rust".

I look (as pointed out in the article) at how well the appearance/condition was maintained. If a gun looks good outside chances are the insides are just as well maintained. If there is rust on the outside, you can bet the inside is worse. FWIW,I have had more trouble from new guns bought at Wal-Mart than from used guns bought from individuals.

I'm sorry but this is not good advice. You are putting us back in the days when we were stuck just buying what is local or what was in the Gun List or Shotgun News (which were already sold if they were a good buy because there was an advance list that got the magazine first). The internet has leveled the playing floor for everyone. It's not just gun dealers who get guns cheap because people want to just sell them. We all get to grab those guns at a good buy now. And 99% of online firearm transactions are completely legit, as described, and the seller will do all the checks that you suggest if you ask. Disgruntled online buyers almost always just never thought to ask that particular question, and the seller didn't think to check themselves. I generally never criticize but this is really bad advice. Someone reading this is going to go to a gun show and pay $900 for a beat up '03 Springfield when he could have gone online and gotten one in near perfect condition for $450, just because he could "physically inspect."

I respectfully disagree with your approach.

thanks for checking it out, just out of curiosity has anybody ever had a problem buying a used gun online ? like i said in my article i have never done it because i cant inspect it first. I agree that are some great deals online but i have always been somewhat wary of buying something i cant look at first, are there return policies for most online gun sales ? i never really looked into it.

I found this site ..................
two days ago and woulod like to ask you if all these guns' accessoiries are really worse buying or not?

After reading this a couple times, all I can say is...Huh???

I like the post except for the "don't buy used guns online" part. I think that places like Gunbroker.com are not a bad way to go if you are searching for something specific that your local market is lacking. I have found that most sellers are decent, honest folks... and you can always try for a gun that has a lifetime warranty if you are worried about it.

Not bad. Although I often buy through the internet. If you do this, check out the seller -- most internet sales and auction sites have a capability for you to do that, and you can also add comments on your satisfaction (or lack thereof) after the purchase.

For the record, I have never had a bad experience in internet buying. I always found the guns I bought to be properly represented.

My goal wasnt to deter people from purchasing guns online, this article was meant more towards a new shooter who may not know what to look for when purchasing a used firearm, when i get a chance i will edit the article a bit and give some info on asking the online seller the proper questions and checking the sellers ratings. I plan on writing more gun related articles on ehow, would it be ok to post them here when i do ? like i said i dont want anybody to think i am trying to spam the forum or anything, i just like getting advice from other gun enthusiests. Thanks to everybody that replied !

I agree here. Buying online has not been a problem for me either. I think it is always "buyer beware". I've had more issues with brand new guns from the dealer than ANY of my many (15+) used ones. Now I have a pending a purchase of a SW99 I hope I don't bring bad ju-ju on me by stating the above [knock wood][/knock wood]. ;) New shooters should have a mentor or someone they trust go with them when they purchase their 1st firearm. I was lucky I had friends who ran the gun store and helped me get a nice .22lr rifle before I got my pistol permit.

I will buy these "near perfect" 1903s for $450. The nine 1903s currently listed on GunAmerica start at $650 for a model with a "fair" condition stock. That is before the $25 shipping and whatever FFL fee needed to receive the gun. Of course you hold that opinion. You are promoting an online gun auction/classified site.

For various reasons, I will also generally not buy online. Not the least of these reasons is that I cannot inspect the firearm. The government restrictions make returns a much more arduous and costly task than returning a book, for example. Those restrictions certainly should be noted for a first time used gun buyer and taken into account.

I'll post the two I bought on GA for that in Twins thread soon. I am in the middle of a move. I see them regularly for that price. You can find AKs still listed at $750 too, that doesn't mean that some don't hit for $300 and they are sold in an hour. That is the nature of classified ads.

He said $900 for a beat up '03. If you pay $650 for a "fair" condition gun, $25 for shipping and $25 for FFL fee, that's only $700 -- $200 less for a better gun.

Been buying and selling guns online for more than ten years and I can't recall having a problem with any purchase...and that's at a rate of at least one purchase or sale per month (normally more if you include accessories). A little caution is fine but one needs a bit more experience to totally discount something like that.
