I recently requested the application for a C&R license and received a letter from the ATF saying that it was on back order.

How can an application be on back order? Do they not have a copy machine?

Does anyone have more info about this?

Basically, the ATF is saying they ran out, and their waiting for more. It is not all that uncommon. When the new 4473 forms first came out, the ATF was back-logged on those for a while as well.

Same here. :cuss: :cuss:

I thought "how could the largest beurocracy in the world .... run out of FORMS!?!?" Isn't that the fuel they run on? Without forms how are the miserly little automatons making it through the day?:banghead:

I mean, little bits of paper that are pre-filled out with inane questions and awaiting simple answers .... Could those possibly be beyond the reach and capability of the great and powerful .gov?

My, how the mighty have fallen.

oh man

Do they not have a copy machine?

im so tempted to call them just to say that. "what, you dont own a copy machine?!. You people RUN on forms and paper work!"

I could swear I just downloaded a PDF of the C&R app off the ATF's site back when I got mine.

I just went there and can't find the form (but I didn't try too hard).

You used to be able to do that... not anymore. You have to request the application and then they send it out (supposedly). :scrutiny:

They told me when I called that, and I quote:

They have never been available from US online. Only from 3rd parties and that is a $300 fine for wrongful distribution of offical forms

Not saying they weren't fibbing, that's just what she said.

Does that mean I can't use it? I was planning on sending mine in within the next couple weeks and was going to use that form.

When I called the ATF they told me that the only acceptable form was the one from them. I ordered it, and had them in hand within 5 days. Order at least two so if you screw up you can have another one handy. Good luck

Yes, they took the form off the site. They may be re-doing the form (per some law or some other guideline that has been handed down from the director) and can't use the old forms but have to use the new forms.

Same thing happened with the 4473's.

They sent me two complete sets anyway. Not sure if this is standard, but everyone I know got the two sets(4 copies, as one goes to ATF and one to your CLEO).

They seem to be running about 3 to 4 weeks behind in the New England area. There seems to be lots of folks getting C&R's lately.

Could be an interesting way of denying FFLs and whatnot - "Sorry, we don't have any forms left"

Got the same letter a few weeks ago. I have a friend or two at the GPO (Government Printing Office), maybe I'll give one of them a call to see if he can speed things up.

edited for spelling.

Can't tell any backup by me my C&R 16 days mailbox to mailbox. I do own an LLC with a manafacturing 07 license that may have had somthing to do with the quick return.

I'd had the form sitting on my desk for about a month and I finally got the time to fill it out and send it in on June 30. The ATF charged my credit card on July 5--two working days after I mailed the application! I suppose that their charging my card means I'm getting the license. . . .

Think That's BAd?

If you think that is bad condiser this...

Years ago while stationed in Germany we discovered we needed a number of forms...BUT... we were out of the form required to order forms... no worry right... I carefully wrote down the forms we needed and how many we needed.... headed happily off to the forms warehouse which happened to be in the same city (Giessen) and not far down the road.

Here I met the prototypical German bureaucrat. I arrived and handed the guy the list of what I needed... he in his best "cerman" told me "zey must be listed on ze form DAxxx (Previous edition obsolete) if zew vant forms." Of course I didn't have any DAxxxx that was on the list of forms I needed.

No problemo right? WRONG... I explained the problem to Herr Beampter. He was very sympathetic... but no forms. So then I asked for one DAxxx (Previous edition obsolete) telling him I would fill it in and all would be well.

Nein... das is not in order. I MUST have the form to get any forms at all.

Finally I left in defeat... went back to another unit and borrowed a form DAxxx to get some forms... only to discover it was the previous edition.

In the end I found someone who had the correct form... after a half a day on Hitler's revenge (The military phone system.)

To add insult to injury Herr Beampter tried to unload some of his obsolete forms on me when he finally filled the order...

IT could be worse.

BTW, they are also backed up on processing applications and renewal...got my renewas like four days before the old one ran out.

FWIW

Nope. It just means you've paid to have the application processed. They charge when they receive it, then it goes to processing.

Actually...the length of time it takes depends on which ATF region you are in. Texas seems to take a while.
